Product Description

Suicide Girls - Beauty Redefined explores the Suicide Girl phenomenon from their start in 2001 to their websites one million unique weekly visitors today. This giant tome provides a timely look at the fascinating women who created and inhabit the SG community. With an introduction by SG founder, Missy Suicide and images of hundreds of SuicideGirls world-wide, this title shines a light on a new female aesthetic - a look reminiscent of vintage Betty Page and Bunny Yeager photos, but with a decisively 21st century edge. "There's no other place in the media to see girls (like these) who are tremendously smart and beautiful in their own way" says Missy, "Everywhere you look you just see the super-thin, super-tall, bleach blonde Baywatch babe. There are a lot of people out there who want to see a different kind of beauty."

Beautifully crafted

Reviewer: Anarchie, England, UK
The first thing to strike you about this book is that it is size. It's huge and very heavy. The whole thing is just very tactile, with it's beautiful thick pages, filled with hundreds and hundreds of images of the Suicide Girls. Courtney Riot's design is subtle, but striking, and the photographed are presented in an artistic way that does not detract from their beauty.

What this book is lacking is the interesting snippits of journals and information that Suicide Girl's first book had. Aside from a brief introduction from Missy, and a description of all SG staff members, the book is lacking any text at all. If you are a subscriber to the SuicideGirls.com site you will realise what a shame this is, as the girls are as intelligent, and interesting as they are attractive.

My recommendation to you is that you are buying this book for a friend, be sure to include a gift subscription from the suicidegirls website, so they can get the full SG experience.

Do You want a massive (6.5lbs) book that's full of amazing women? Since you're already on this page, I ask that assuming that you want to see women who are beautiful, sexy, and like nothing you will ever see in the pages of Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler. This book is 7 years worth of eye candy from a site that changed the face of web erotica remarkably and permanently, and did indeed redefine beauty in that genre. It's only a matter of time before "Suicidegirl" is a word in the dictionary.

Someone asked me when this book came out "How can they say 'Redefining Beauty' when all of the girls in the book are attractive?"

uhm... precisely.
Everything I was hoping for

Bought the book as a gift for my boyfriend and we both loved it. It's the Suicide Girls so you're going to expect something good. Loved how the book was divided by regions with regards to the model's locale and the photos were great. If you already have books or videos from the Suicide Girls this in no way overlaps but compliments your collection. It's the type of book that you'll want to look at over and over.

the book is totally awesome, and the circumstances in which i got it are as well, but we wont got into that. the few reviews i read before i decided i would include my opinion are dead on with the facts as this is a great book to have. worth the price. the girls are awesome. all that.
i couldnt agree more, but what i want to let everybody thinking about buying this is to know is if you go but it off of the suicidegirls site, it comes autographed by missy suicide (found of suicide girls) and courtney riot (art designer for the book) for 40 bucks AND as of right now, you would get a free dvd with your order.

with that being said, BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU LOVE HOT CHICKS.
Books with beautiful girls redefined

Review Date: March 18, 2009
Reviewer: D. Raskin, sacramento ca
Pensive, thoughtful, inquisitive, playful, artistic, original, edgy, provacative, intellectual, breathtaking, and beautiful; this book redefines that age old question of "what is sexy?" It takes and presents a redefining experience in 396 pages of exquisitely shot and gorgeously laid out pics of girls who populate the concert halls, tattoo parlors, and coffee shops of our imaginations. It is the pictorial equivalent of a DJ successfully spinning jazz to heavy metal to emo to flamenco to classical, with spices of goth and alternative subtly mixed in, all while making it seem effortless and never alienating you.

The book, with little to no dialogue, relies on it's strength of the brightly shot pics of the girls, and allows these pics to tell their story. Within the pages there are pictures covering a variety of girls with different body types, attitudes, and interests in assorted poses, positions, and attire. Going from page to page you may find yourself staring at them like the girl who walks into a room that you can't take your eyes off of, or the girl who lives next door, or the girl buying that cool book that you long to talk to, and realize they do this without ever making you feel awkward.

Yet the real success of the book is by going across America, from the West coast to East, and then broadening out to Europe and the rest of the world, the book captures that this redefining beauty is not just regional or isolated to one country, but it is indeed worldwide.

It's big, it's hard, yet smooth and filled with creamy goodness. Wait, don't take that wrong! :P This is definitely a book to replace that dusty old family bible that you've been using as a beer coaster for years. Anytime you need any inspiration, or if you're feeling down in the dumps, flip through this beast of beauty and you'll realize that all your fears and worries are nothing but a warm, salty paste easily wiped away with a tissue. No no, get your mind out of the gutter. I'm talking the cheese dip you dropped on your brand new wife beater. No worries. :) Buy the book. The End.

The minds behind Suicide Girls continue to astound and stretch the idea of what beauty is. Everyone thinks they know beauty when they see a sunrise, until they hear their first Beatles album, then they listen to their first Hendrix, then they read their first Hunter S. Thompson novel...

So it goes with this book as it redefines beauty in art. The strength of these women jump off the page and mesmerize with quiet, yet graceful, insouciance.

In a word: resplendent.

I couldn't think of a more appropriate title for this book. As a child of the 80's, I grew up in the era where tattoos and piercings started becoming acceptable. There is still a certain stigma attached to people with body mods, and much more so for a woman, but I have to say I find nothing more beautiful than a tattooed woman. This book will shed a new light on this subculture and show that these women are as beautiful, and to me even more so, than any mainstream fashion or runway model out there. This is a must see for anyone who loves the beauty of body art and for those curious about something they may have never seen like this before.

I love SuicideGirls, I adore them. I have every other publication they offer and they're all top notch. This is the pinnacle of a pop culture Queen's magnificent, brief career. I love this book, however, a couple of major things kept this from being 5 stars. First, the photographs are wonderful, big, bold and beautiful, but the Photoshop tweaking of colors is a little too much. Second, where is Asia represented? Hello! Tokyo! But over 375 pages of the most beautiful women to ever walk the Earth, it's still worth every cent and faster shipping. Los Angeles women are inked supreme!

The book is a collection of naked alternative women. By alternative I mean tattooed, pierced, colored and different (e.g. bald, half-bald, dreadlocks) hair.
It is very fun to see so many different women, which is what the book proposes in the first place.
You'll see a lot of breasts and not many genitalia. So it might be generally accepted as a coffee table book.

In a nutshell: fun erotica.

Great book and got it for a good price too. Everywhere I looked it would have cost me the full price of $40.00 but buying it here I managed to buy it alot cheaper. The book has hundreds of pictures of diffrent Suicide Girls models and the cool thing is, is that the book seperates them by contry and continent. The book is big enough to keep to bust looking at it for hours and it will never get old.

Hello;

Beauty can be found everywhere. Beauty within beauty is an anthem. I love to watch tattos, piercing, hair styles, clothestyles on skin of the absolutely most beatyfull beings, and try to feel part of them, id like to know what they think how would they view me, I feel part of the same source, a lightbeam of their heat, statement, and yell out together to celebrate our culture, values, fears, and wishes. I sure hope this honest, unvaluavable art endures and thank you for sharing it.

The book is done in a very tasteful manner and the models are Stunning. As a coffee table book I think it will start many conversations and be the center of discussions for a long time to come at my place. The book itself is well made and the pictures are clear and crisp. The pages are heavy materials and look like they should last a good long time. I am very happy with my purchase!!

"Beauty Redefined", is an excellent book, that takes you inside the current craze, known as the Suicide Girls. It takes you from the creation, to today. You get a good feel, of what goes on behind the scenes, and you'll get a definite understanding of why millions of members enjoy their magazine, and website. If you are intrigued by these alternatives to your common "Barbie Doll" models, or if you are just curious why they are so popular, then this is a good read. Even my wife enjoyed it!

What is beauty? This is a question that everyone must decide for themselves. Some choose to go with the mainstream definition, what society tells us is beautiful. Others, however, choose to follow their own rules. If you are part of the latter group, this book is just for you. The women portrayed inside are some of the most original and beautiful women you will ever have the pleasure of seeing. I have been a fan of SG since the beginning, and it just keeps getting better. I would recommend this book to anyone, that is unless you have a fear of originality. Check it out!

Reviewer: A. Bowling,
The SuicideGirls never cease to amaze me at their ability to capture beauty on film. In a world caught up in two-girls-one-cup, the decline of "simple" nude magazines and the pervasiveness of hardcore pornography, the SuicideGirls manage to reinvigorate sexy with a wide range of models even partially clothed. I highly recommend this book for your coffee table.

It's about time there is a book with the Suicide Girls. Not everyone is into the perfect 10 model girls you see in ads that are force fed to us. Finally someone put out a classy book with girls who are not exactly the normal everyday girls. I think everyone like something different and has different ideas on beauty. I think these girls are a perfect example of this. Keep up the good work!

Its not necessarily that beauty needs to be redefined, but this book opens you up to the whole other side of the beauty spectrum. Its not really what one would think, I of course remember the first time i heard of the site, but once i was in it was amazing. And even though yes these beauties are naked for the most part the style and grace they bring to the pages is reminiscent of the art of DaVinci, and Leonardo. The way the camera can make you look at certain parts of the pages.
This book is truly amazing, and the Suicide Girls themselves are amazing. How could you not give kudos to the people willing to "bare all" for the sake of art and beauty.
When you look at this book please know that every time you turn the page to see these amazing girls know that you will not want the last page to come. But fortunately you coffee table will always have a friend and you can enjoy these photos over and over again.

This book is filled with the most beautiful women on the planet looking their best in a colorful edgy manner that I personally think is a dream come true. It is the best the suicide girls has to offer it expands minds (along with other things) and is a perfect table side decoration. always enjoyable to pick up because it seems it never ends and when it does it's almost like starting a brand new suicide girls book when you start over because there is always something nice to look at something you may not have noticed before and that's why I highly recommend it to anyone with any sort of taste.. it's got something for everyone, so get rid of those angel figurines that you bought at that garage sale last Saturday because we all know they are truly the ones sent down from heaven (the cbgb's portion of it at least) this is way more worthy of that space on your coffee table or your nightstand or dresser or kitchen table for that matter, it can spice up anything and everything if you let it.
The Honest Truth

Review Date: March 18, 2009
Reviewer: Curt,
After seeing this book for the first time, at a friends house, I ordered one for myself. As a professional photographer I think this is one of the most honest books available, it has hundreds of pictures of beautiful girls and their body art. While showing some nudity this book is not about pornography. It's not about fashion models, it's more about the girl next door.

The photography is brilliant, the cameras angles and depth of field are worth drooling over. If you're a new photographer this book could be described as a how to pose book, with hundred of artistic venues for you to choose from. Did I say the girls are sexy, so sexy you also want a subscription to the Suicide Girls website. A must have book.

This book is a treasure of the 21st century of a new form of art. It takes the older look of the 30s and 40s and pushes it into the modern era with new twists and turns, portraying beauty at it's newest and rawest.
While each girl may not be to everyone's liking, they offer an new twist on art and if it isn't your cup of tea, then don't drink and find something like an anorexic model who fits the mold of, well nothing.

I've had the original SuicideGirls book as a coffee table book for years now, and it has always been a great conversation starter and gorgeous addition to my living room. When I was at a used bookstore in downtown Atlanta the other weekend, I almost passed out when I saw there was a new book. "Look, look!" I said, pulling my best friend's sleeve. "It's SG!" I knew I didn't even have to look at it, that I'd love it immediately, but I sat in the store and looked through the pictures for a little while. What I saw was a-maaa-zing. In short: the introduction is inspiring, the pictures are larger than the last book's, and the girls practically pop off of the page. I love how it is divided into regions so that you can search for cuties in your area or from your hometown (or am I the only one who legitimately did that?). Beauty Redefined has found its way onto my coffee table, too, now, and I am very, very glad that I purchased it. I highly, highly recommend it to any fan of photography, portraits, tattoos, pin-ups, or, of course, SuicideGirls. :)

You should buy suicidegirls: beauty redefined to support these girls for taking down the mainstream's idea of beauty. I'm tired of being told what i should look like by the media. These girls don't care anymore! There shoving it in your face. These women are the opposite of the media's "beauty". They are all different shapes and sizes, colors, with tattoo's and piercing.

They give me hope for the world.

NEVER have I EVER experienced a full-on DIY, female affirming, rock & roll type of expression in our generation. I have been a member of the SG site for a while now, and would encourage ANYONE to become a member themselves, expecially after purchasing and reading this book. While the contraindications are that this is exploitative to women- F THAT. Some sets are shot by professionals, and some are not- leaving artistic license to the model and photographer, and allowing the girls' personality, triumph, beauty, struggle and art shine so brilliantly. These girls are self-made, hardcore, rough around the edges and whole-heartedly unapologetic. This has given so much inspiration and enjoyment to many- including myself. ROCK ON, GIRLS!
A big win for SG!

This book, like everything else to do with Suicide Girls, is a wonderful work of art that dives deep into the world of present day pin ups. From the completely tattooed and pierced alternative beauty, to the rock chick, and also to the 'girl next door', this book has somthing for everone.

The one thing I love most about the SG, is they target every type of women...unlike the typical magazine that has girls whom seem to be strung out, and no real beauty. The SG show art through their photos and tattoos. It is truly amazing.

This book captures the true beauty of the SG. Most definitely something I have setting on my coffee table. Along with Micheal Godard's book. They both capture art, the only difference SG are real people and not olives and martini glasses.

I highly recommend buying this book!!

What is beauty? I often find myself asking this question when I look at people. I think all people are beautiful, and can be appreciated as such.
A smile, a glance from across the room, a person that just exudes a glow and draws everyone to them.
This book has very artistically provocative photos of every kind of woman: tattooed, pierced, hair artificially colored, and not. They are beautiful to look at. They are the kind of girl we have been envious of in school,
the girls who we made fun of as outcasts, or the kind of young women we used to be, or even want to be. Confident sometimes to the point of cocky, uncompromising, unashamed and glamourous. Each and every one of them. They are the new role models: strong women who I think I would have looked up to as a little girl.

This book gives those who are not familiar with the world of SG a tastefully inspiring sample of what it's like to reject the constraints of "conventional" erotica and instead express a playfully sexy and often wildly fun way to explore what true beauty is! You girls are awesome!!!

The first SG book sits proudly on my coffee table. It doesn't get put up at Christmas or when guests come over. It's art. And it's always fun to watch people "sneak a peek", of course that's when I show them my favorite pages and they relax. The sequel will sit right beside it. SG has allowed hundreds of women the chance to feel lovely in their own skin and proudly portrays it all yet again.

Reviewer: D. Baker,
My first impressions with this book were awe at the pure beauty of the girls. As always, Suicide girls are beauty at its best, but this book takes it to another level. Its sheer size is reminiscent of a thick record.. VERY thick. With over 300 pages of sexy women of the alternative lifestyles, I cannot help but keep turning pages.
The photography is colorful and unique. It should be a coffee table book at the least, and it is definitely a work of art! Very well done!

Reviewer: Megan Slick,
This book has images of very unconventionally beautiful women. It is great that suicide girls are breaking society's view of what a beautiful woman is. People have evolved and so has beauty and this book shows many images that redefine the old definition of what beauty is. The images are very unique and the pictures have great quality to them. As a pierced and tattooed female myself I am glad to see that they can show the beauty in having body mods.

Not to mention really, really hot girls, fully nude. You (or me) could spend hours thumbing through the many pages and still never get bored. Basically all you could ask for in a book!
Good job

This book is full of pictures of these gorgeous ladies. It's huge and there are so many pages. Some of these girls I didn't know before, and then there were the same old favorites.

It has very little text, though. I like hearing from the girls, they always have something interesting to say. There were journal excerpts in the first book, and I loved that.

This book captures the very esscence of what Suicide Girls is all about. The girls are not your typical mainstream models. Some have tattoos, some have piercings, different hair coloring or some combination of all three. In my opinion they are better than the mainstream because they are the girls you would see in your own hometown. All of the girls are beautiful in their own unique way. The photography is top notch and the girls are very beautiful.
The book is well put together and will make a great addition to anyones collection. I was nothing more than floored when I recieved mine.

Beauty Redefined explores the Suicide Girl phenomenon from the start of their website, with only a few visitors logging on each day, to today's one million unique weekly visitors logging on, to see this true Beauty Phenomenon.

This giant Full Color Book, gives you a look at the fascinating women who created and inhabit the community,
Of what they call Suicide Girls Today.

When you first open the book, you will be amazed! A very nice introduction by Missy Suicide (Founder of SG) will pull you even further into the community and leave you wanting to turn to the next page to wonder at every square inch of picture there is to offer.

Not one picture is the same pin-up classic like everyone is used to. These pictures and the models portrayed in this book are simply true beauty at its finest.

Men and women, tattoo artists, piercers and artists in general - this book will serve as a valuable addition to any collection. The art work alone on their flesh and bone is truly amazing. Each picture indulges you into a full story just waiting to be interpreted.

"There's no other place in the media to see girls (like these) who are tremendously smart and beautiful in their own way" says Missy, "Everywhere you look you just see the super-thin, super-tall, bleach blonde Baywatch babe. There are a lot of people out there who want to see a different kind of beauty."

This title shines light on just that. Suicide Girls is radically changing today's standards of what humanity deems sexy, beautiful, and what is acceptable in today's society, and breaks all the boundaries showing how weary man really can be, and is creating such a phenomenon doing it.

You can't go wrong with wanting to peek around the corer, start bending the next page, just waiting to get to that eye-candy on the next page.

Mankind is truly beautiful and Astonishing! Suicide Girls shows us just that, and in a way that strikes us to our very own existence.

Buy this book today! Experience true beauty while supplies last.

SG provides yet more amazing art on their website.

Part of what makes this book amazing is obviously naked women. But I think there is so much more to it then that. Suicide Girls are girls that have stopped fearing what people will think if them. Yes some are the traditionally skinny pretty girls, some are plus size, but all are gorgeous. This is about celebrating the female form and the beauty it creates, the art you can put on it. This isn't just a book to skim through. Its a book to make you retrain your eye to detail, these girls have personality that leaks through the pages. I know I love my copy and I am setting up to try out as one myself. Female power in raw form!

'Beauty Redefined' gives you a great look at the girls of the counter-culture that is part of most young people's lives this day and age. The name says it all. You won't find your pre-packaged beauty queens here. What you will see is what feels like peeking into the secret life of women who walk a different path in life. You'll feel the thrill with every page turn as you take a closer look through the peep-hole. The photos are elegant and tasteful, and each girl has a different attitude, a different feel, that is almost as apparent as the beautiful ink that graces their skin. If you're tired of the plain and bland, then this book is definitely for you. It makes a great addition to any coffee table.

Suicide Girls are way better than Playboy models. If I had a choice I'd pick a Suicide Girl over a Playboy Model anyday. All the piercings and tattoos are so beautiful and I love the way they live their life the way they want. These Suicide Girls are better in every way than a ditzy blonde model. Suicide girls should be more excepted in society and I can't wait until they reach the main stream because I'm sick of seeing the same blonde ignorant women on TV and magazines, they are all clones.

Take a step back and ask yourself: when was the last time I saw a good collection of art and photography?

You haven't until you've purchased SuicideGirls: Beauty Redefined. There isn't a single flaw that comes to mind when I look through this book and come to think of it, it was well worth every penny.

Every girl is beyond photogenic and the photos really do pop out at you. The pictures are all vibrant and every page is worth more than a once over. Each girl is breathtaking and helps you remember why guys AND girls can't help but be captivated by their art and piercing decorated bodies.

The book itself is well-bound and uniquely shaped. This is something anyone one can appreciate, whether they find the girls beautiful or they just love the things they've done with their hair, piercings, or tattoos.

Give it a shot if you're unsure. It definitely deserves a peek; but of course, after you do that, you'll be buying it yourself.

Wow, incredible. They took art, defecated on it, made it into porn, and put it in the oven to bake at 350 for a few hours. Voila! Now, SuicideGirls can defile your coffee table as well as your browser with 396 pages of unattractive "models", complete with all the pasty skin, saggy breasts, cheap, Hepatitis-scarred tattoos, and ugly piercings we've all come to expect from the harlot know-how of people like "Missy Suicide". Why pay $0.00 to see untalented, overpriced use of filters that anybody with a mouse and Photoshop can figure out and post to their Myspace, when you could get all that and a hard cover for just $31.32? But wait, using sephia filters and blurring the edges of the photo is art, right? Of course, sex sells, even ugly sex, so I'm sure the pornographic exploits of the SuicideGirls will spawn us a wonderful sequel to enjoy sooner or later. I predict it will coincide with the newest release of Photoshop, the one where they double the "artistic" filters you can apply to your terrible porn stills!

Fantastic fashion drawing and design book

Review Date: July 6, 2005
Reviewer: Rosemary Saunders, New York, USA
This book has been really helpful and I will continue to use it throughout my fashion design course. It has shown me how to draw the fashion figure, and even faces and hands, really simply. I like the way it shows you how to draw different fashion figures, draw the clothing and then make fashion presentations from your artwork. Plus it has lots of cool examples of fashion drawings by different designers and illustrators. I would recommend this book to everyone who is interested in fashion design. It is really informative and inspiring!

Amazing Bang for the Buck

Review Date: July 5, 2007
Reviewer: Bvnni,
For years, I've sketched fashion/outfits, automobiles, and architecture simply as a hobby. Because of schedule conflicts, proper classes to develop skills have never been possible. Naturally, I began looking for a "text book" that would help me to improve my proportion and shading skills as I've had the most difficulty with "human subjects".

After numerous purchases of everything from how-to books to actual text books, I can confidently say that Fashion Artist by Sandra Burke is exactly what I needed it to be. With clear examples, step by step instructions and lists of required materials, this book takes what can seem to be an overwhelming situation (figuring out proper limb placement and size plus contouring) and breaks it down into engaging, easy to retain information.

As someone who appreciates all styles of illustration, I also enjoyed the variety of artwork used to showcase the amazing potential offered to a budding artist.

Some of the "problem areas" that this book covers are hands and feet, facial features, and fabric rendering.

Whether you're a fashion illustrator looking for a refresher, an artist wanting to expand, or simply someone who enjoys all things fashion, this book fits the bill. I highly recommend this book.

I absolutely love it!...It is full of cool, colorful fashion illustrations. It makes drawing the fashion figure so simple! I really like the details that go into each page in the book...it is easy to follow the step-by step drawing techniques or just be inspired to go for it by looking at all the other artists' work included in the book.

There is a great section on drawing flats, and although it focuses on women's wear, has excellent chapters on men, children, costume design and the Fashion Portfolio - these are really useful as they are not often covered in other books that I've seen.
Very helpful, well written, and easy to use.

I bought this book for my 16 yr old daughter who is an aspiring fashion designer. To get into design school & possibly qualify for a scholarship, she must prepare a portfolio. She expressed concern that her sketching skills would look amateurish so she asked for a book to help her.

This book shows in picture and text detail the supplies needed to do a project & an easy format to follow. She loved it and was so excited to have a guide to help her. This book not only helps in this regard, but has several sections that gives pointers on design elements and much more pertinent information.

If you or someone you know is an aspiring fashion designer, do not hesitate to get this book. It will be a valuable tool that will be put t good use.
Excellent book especially for fashion students!

The fashion drawing techniques and illustrations in this book are excellent, plus it gets you up to speed quickly by focusing on key points. It is well laid out and can be followed step by step or dipped into wherever you feel you need some help with particular aspects of your fashion drawing or designing. The illustration styles are varied and inspiring - it covers fashion templates, flats and presentations for womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and even costume design!

The chapters on figure drawing techniques have some excellent advice and examples of poses, and those tricky things like faces, hands and feet. The chapters on layouts, presentions, mood & design boards, and getting a design portfolio together concentrate on the main points with examples of artwork from designers and illustrators in the fashion industry.

It is an excellent resource for those studying fashion or want to enter the fashion industry.

This book is a great start for beginners who want to work in the fashion industry or for those who consider fashion designing a hobby and want to improve on their illustration skills, like myself. Burke starts with the basics, like learning how to draw the female figure in different poses and drawing some examples of clothes, but she also touches upon fabric rendering and ideas on how to make a presentation. There's even a section on designing for men, childeren, and costumes. Overall a very informative, clear and consise book to get started and to encourage and inspire amateurs to want to learn more.

I'm wanting to become a fashion designer and i bought this book and i was amazed. it really teaches you how to draw fashion models (and people in general) in all different poses. it shows you so many different poses both with an actual person modeling the pose and then a block figure showing you how to draw it. after the structure is learned, it teaches you in a really easy way how to flesh it out, and then how to draw the clothes and how the clothes are supposed to look at folds and creases. if you like this book, i recommend Draw Fashion Models! by Lee Hammond, a great book that goes in depth into more poses and how you should draw the clothes and how they look when the arms are raised, when you're leaning on one hip, etc.

i really recommend buying this amazing book, it's straightforward and very helpful!

I bought this book a while back based on the stars and reviews but was actually really disappointed. Why? If you go to art schools that push fashion design as a major that work with actual major clothing labels... the drawings you see being cranked out of the top schools do not look like this. I actually recommend Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques by Naoki Watanabe. I had a chance to actually look at it at the art store down the street from my art school which is cranking out fashion designers for the actual job market.

I teach drawing to students between 3rd grade on up to high school. I have been buying books to expose my students to the various art industries and what they are looking for now so they can get themselves a head start if they so choose such careers later in their lives. This book was perfect and great when if first came out, but things have changed.

Easy to follow illustrations and no frills instructions make me rate this book very highly. I am a beginner with no design experience and very little aptitude for drawing. However I was able to use this book and started sketching basic designs in no time.

Postively Posh

Review Date: November 8, 2007

Better known as "Posh Spice" of the Spice Girls fame, Victoria Beckham has always been recognized worldwide for her chic, stylish look. No matter which role she plays - singing superstar, wife of David Beckham, mummy to three boys, designer - she always manages to look put together and just right. Not an easy feat as any modern woman will tell you.

Well, Ms. Beckham has decided to part with her style secrets in this fun, colorful book to help us average Janes avoid looking "frumpy or mumsy". Whether giving the scoop on jeans and proper fit, beauty care, or dressing for a special occasion, Beckhman manages to keep the tone practical, light and conversational - what you'd expect if your most stylish buddy sat you down and filled you in on the details, from where to buy to what works with what. She generously lists desginers and stores where you can acquire some of the same attire that she favors. The chapters on packing tips and maternity wear are great - surely this will help many of us poor souls be less dowdy when with child or with skies!

Some of the advice is pretty funny ("The first things I will say about dressing for the holidays is to get all images of reindeer jumpers out of your head."), some of it very useful ("When trying on new shoes, do it towards the end of the day when your feet have had a chance to expand."). Whether or not you are a fan of Ms. Beckham, you will certainly appreciate much of her counsel.

There are many lush, striking photos of Victoria looking very "posh" and chic as well as gorgeous line drawings throughout, making the book eye candy for all of us fashion lovers. This is one of my favorite parts of the book.

A couple critiques: some of the lingo is purely British and takes some getting used to (ex: she refers to tank tops as 'vests' which was very confusing for me) and some of the designers/stores she lists are NOT in America, which is only a hindrance if your sole goal is to imitate her style (not my goal). And some of these designer/stores are VERY expensive, making some of her suggesions out of reach for regular folk like myself.

Lastly, she freely utilizes every opportunity to promote her own line of clothing, dVb, a high end line that she subtly implies is one of the most stylish. Although some may find this galling or even annoying, I say bravo for her moxy and industrious spirit - what else would you expect from Posh Spice?
I confess: I loved it.

I read this book while recuperating from surgery and I have to say it was perfect for taking my mind off my health issues. It's surprising. I didn't expect Victoria Beckham to come off as fun and likeable as she does. Now to the point of the book: Does it offer good fashion advice? Yeah, it does. She's spot on when she disses the kitten heel shoe. Unless you are built like Audrey Hepburn (I'm not)it doesn't do your legs any favors. She's excellent in the makeup chapter and even though I don't wear jeans her jeans chapter contained everything you need to know. I wish everyone would read it before buying a pair. It would cut down on a lot of public ugliness.

The chapter on getting ready for a party was excellent and timely for this season. I liked the chapter on maternity dressing and appreciated the chapter on how to wear hair extensions.

Overall this book made me happy and I plan to keep it and refer to it for years to come.
Too much fun

I bought this book as a gift for my wife. (I hope she doesn't see this review before the holidays.) I took a look inside, and I think it's going to be a big hit. Mrs. Beckham has a talent for combining utter sincerity with self-mockery in a way that is completely irresistable. I think it would be impossible to have a bad day while reading this book.
Shameless self-promotion, but entertaining in a campy way

I bought this on a whim to read something girly while my boyfriend was out of town. I love fashion books and thought this would have some useful and fun little tidbits. Not exactly, but not a total waste either.

Victoria Beckham believes her own hype so deeply that it's almost impossible to take her seriously. When the book is not crammed with glam shots of her -- where it's often impossible to see what she's wearing, even though this is a style book -- it is filled with self-promotion in other ways. Every other page of the jeans section is her selling her own jeans line, when she recommends fragrances there's a giant picture of "Intimately Beckham" luring us in. A stupid move, as both of these lines aren't succeeding, and the book seems dated as soon as it's published. Better -- and much classier -- to acknowledge that you have your own lines in a small section, then focus on fashion and style overall. It would also be better if she had used other models to show examples of her style and fashion tips -- maybe a "posh makeover" or something. But this is not that book -- instead, the focus is suffocatingly on her, so much though that it's pretty funny at times. "Oh look at her again! Another pouty face! Long haired victoria! Short haired victoria!"

I think my favorite moment of unintentional hilarity is when victoria pleads with women not to wear bras with padding under tanks or t-shirts. Presumably one should have fake ones put in instead and have them pushed up the way victoria does? And the recommendation never to wear shorts with sneakers is ridiculous when there are fabulous little sneaks out there by John Varvatos for converse. The recommendation for high heels is, in general, myopic. There's nothing the world needs less than tiny women teetering on the edge of stilettos.

She has had an extraordinary career, even though underneath all of the styling she is a pretty ordinary looking person. When you look at her underneath all of the clothes and style she has really cultivated an image for herself -- perhaps her talent is self-invention. She is rigorous about every aspect of her appearance before she leaves the house -- something I wish was true of me.

I will also say that this book is going to be very useful on an upcoming trip to the UK, in terms of navigating high street brands for a little budget shopping.

So i'd say get it if you really like her, or if you have her exact body type and can copy styles directly, or if it's cheap, or if you care about the difference between H and M vs topshop in terms of sunglasses.

When I heard that Victoria Beckham was publishing a style guide I was curious. I'm not a fan, but I don't have anything against her either.

Having now read it (it took a day) I'm still a bit undecided. `That Extra Half an Inch' is written in a cosy style - it's like you're having a cup of coffee with Mrs Beckham. The book is nicely set into different sections; Tops, Day Dresses, Gifts (a lovely idea), make-up (disappointing) etc. And the photos are really stunning.

That said I didn't actually learn anything new. This book is mostly a higher end where-to-buy guide. Come on - are all of the designer names Vic drops really useful to the average person on the street? Are our husbands going to whisk us off to Paris and New York for shopping? (Even if they did have the money I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you).

Also, I think the book is sponsored by Top Shop; I lost count of the number of times the shop name cropped up. We can go to Gucci or Topshop, Fendi or Topshop, and so forth. She knows the name of a high street store, we get it; Vicky's one of us!!

I'm really conflicted in my view. A lovely, if impractical, style guide. I would get another book, if one was ever published, just because of the nice, intimate writing style.
Light and fun

I just love this book. I have the hardcover version, purchased from Amazon UK, so I am not quite sure what the paperback will bring, but I think it's worth a review. I wouldn't say it's a true style manual; rather, it's one woman's love affair with clothes, make-up, and accessories, no matter what the cost, high-end or Land's End. It's written in a very warm, friendly tone, almost as if the two of you went shopping for a day and took a break for lunch. There are really nice illustrations and some fun candid photos of Mrs. Beckham that bring life to the pages. This isn't a book to read if you're looking to put together a wardrobe from scratch; instead, it's something fun to page through if you're stuck in a rut, maybe looking for an idea or two, and wanting to see how much fun it is to be extravagant.
Selling her own brand

Reviewer: Hello from CA,
This book was
1. No duh fashion advice and
2. Blatently promoting her brand dVb.

I love fashion and I am not a snob about it, but this book provided no solid advice for me except to try out Elizabeth Arden's Eight-Hour Cream. One exerpt was "do not wear a white bra under a white shirt - it shows! Wear a nude bra instead." Not sure about you ladies, but I have known this when I was 12 getting a training bra. It would have been a much better book if it wasn't meant for UK women and if it had more pictures/drawings of what is in style. Reading it simply does not do the trick. On the bright side, it is a fast and easy read.

I was under the impression that this book was going to be a guide to dressing yourself to look your best. I was dead wrong. It started out by saying that you don't have to have a lot of money to be classy and I agree whole-heartedly. But then she completely contradicts herself the rest of the book. She name-drops pretty much every high-end designer you could think of. It's a blatant advertisement for her denim line. It is also the most repetitive piece of "literature" I have ever read. Every subject she talks about she uses the same exact wording. She always tells you that you "this type of clothing (e.g. t-shirt) you have to spend money on if you want to look good." I could understand if she said this about one article of clothing, but she said it about ALL articles of clothing. She pretty much scrapped her statement at the beginning and the book turned out to be a way for her to show off how much money she has and how wonderful her husband is. Long story short: I read this on an airplane and I had a choice between this book and a skymall catalog. I chose the skymall catalog.
A Fun Read

Ok, let me just be honest. I only bought this book because I have an unhealthy obsession with Victoria Beckham, but I was pleasantly surprised. Being an avid lover of fashion, I can tell a good style guide from a bad one. This, while a little bit in the middle, tends to be more of a good style guide. It has a lot of valuable information about clothes, beauty, and other fashion-related issues, with plenty of label/store suggestions that all range from cheaper stores like H&M, to the more pricier Louboutin's and Jimmy Choo. All the while, with a conversation-style writing on Posh's part.

My only complaints, however, is that this book seems to be like one big advertisement for dVb (Victoria's label with husband, David). In each section, she has incorporated a "...oh, and I've created something just as good for dVb" element, which tends to be boring and mundane.

Also, while she does address SOME cheaper stores and labels, the majority of the book is written for someone who has money like her (I added up the value of her "bath and body care kit" and it came out to somewhere in the upper $700s for about 10 cosmetic products), which clearly, most of us do not have.

That all being said, if you follow her tips about style and fashion, you will look amazing (a sexy blonde bob, optional.).
Impractical book...

Reviewer: Jamie,
Waste of money. I love Victoria's style and thought this book would be about how to realistically acquire classic looks on a "normal" person's budget, and it's really about Victoria's amazing designer clothing and shoe collection. I enjoyed looking at the pictures, but I would have been better off going to the local book store during my work break and reading it there. There's just so little substance here and the book is awfully impractical.
Blatant self-promotion

She pitches her own clothing, that of high priced designers, and comes off as an empty headed clothes horse. Save your money, and spend it on clothing instead of her "advice."
I really liked this!

Reviewer: G. Price,
I'm a beauty product & fashion junkie. I'm not a die-hard VBeckham follower. I'm a regular person with an average budget. Yes, she raves about brand names (clothing) that most of us can't or won't afford, but that didn't take away from the charm of the book.

I'd compare this book to a girl sitting down & writing about her favorite girlie things & sharing what she's learned along the way. If you're looking for specific guidelines on fashion & beauty...or looking to be told what to do, you will be disappointed. If you enjoy the ramblings & thoughts, and like to be inspired by the sheer joy & excitement fashion plays in the life of another girly-girl....get it! I will re-read this book section-by-section and enjoy every second of it. It makes me think more about what I like & what I don't like.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! This book is pure GARBAGE! This is the worst book on the market! Just another "celebrity" expounding on their views of fashion - or at least what they consider to be fashion. Okay - so she's a Spice Girl and married to David Beckham, but more importantly she won't be caught dead without her high heels!! (OMG!) 384 pages later, I was literally bored to tears. She likes to wear sexy underwear for herself (okay, what woman doesn't!) and she LOVES wearing blue jeans (again, what woman doesn't!). Give me a break! If I lived in England, this book would be a great help, but since half the stores she frequents are not in the United States - we're all out of luck and I guess, not in style. I give this book "1 stiletto" - for lack of substance and no real fashion advice. Ladies, unless your some pre pubescent tween and a fan of the Spice Girls, don't bother with this book.

Easy reading (even for non-native english speaker). But in comparison with other books in this category it has lack of really useful information.
However it is interesting point of view on personal style. Some shops from her lists can also be useful. I won't recommend this book to start with if you want to build your new look or wardrobe. But some tips can be interesting to adopt as unusual accent in someone's existing style.
Ugh

That Extra Half an Inch is the story of, well Victoria Beckham. I thought that this book was not so much a guide to fashion and choosing pieces that are right for the wearer, so much as an autobiography of Victoria Beckham. I thought that all Victoria mentioned were: David, mother of three, her fashion line, her time as a Spice Girl, blah, blah, blah. Is it any coincidence that this book was released in the United States at around the same time she moved here? And the shameless name dropping! Where do I start with that? Most of the brands she recommended were designer labels. And, it seemed as though on every other page there was a picture of Victoria!

Also, I thought that she could have done a better job at Americanizing this version of the book. It's all well to mention cute inexpensive clothes and the stores you can buy them in, but it doesn't help me one bit if most said stores are in the UK! I wish a little more research had been done with regards to buying in America, because there are some truly fabulous places here in New York that sell exactly the same type of clothes and accessories that Victoria's book talks about. Another example of the fact that this book was too UK-based was that at one point she explained to the reader what Abercrombie and Fitch is. And, she used too much British slang.

All that being said, however, she does give some great tips on finding clothes that are right for a woman's body type. Otherwise, her advice was kind of generic. But the drawings are pretty.
Excellent!

I love this book! It's very easy to read and contains a lot of pictures of Victoria, of clothes and some drawing. I also love the list of "where to buy"...there's a lot of information for those who care about fashion. and as for me, i love having useful books that also look gorgeous, it's so nice to hold this kind of book in your hands. it is worth to buy i think.

Trashy celebrity bios are usually diminished by the fact that we've already heard the stories about Lonnie and Burt, or Madonna and Sean, or whoever the current target is. Author Stephen Fried manages to get all the sleaze value plus a lot of surprises by choosing supermodel Gia Carangi as his topic. Although her face is widely recognized, Gia finished her modeling career in a blaze of heroin and disease just before the time when models became celebrities with name recognition. Her life is the perfect fodder for the exploitation market, but Fried goes beyond that with fluid prose and a reporter's nose for tracking down sources. His stories about her teenage years, with their mix of late nights in Philadelphia's gay clubs, manic worship, and glam-style imitation of David Bowie, as well as tales of Gia's ability to seduce her friends, male and female, are the product of a lot of work and make for very interesting reading. Gia's unabashed homosexuality and early death from AIDS make her story a palimpsest of life on the edge in the America of the 1980s.

Product Description

"Shards of glass can cut and wound or magnify a vision," Terry Tempest Williams tells us. "Mosaic celebrates brokenness and the beauty of being brought together." Ranging from Ravenna, Italy, where she learns the ancient art of mosaic, to the American Southwest, where she observes prairie dogs on the brink of extinction, to a small village in Rwanda where she joins genocide survivors to build a memorial from the rubble of war, Williams searches for meaning and community in an era of physical and spiritual fragmentation.

In her compassionate meditation on how nature and humans both collide and connect, Williams affirms a reverence for all life, and constructs a narrative of hopeful acts, taking that which is broken and creating something whole.
