The best book for those who want to simplify

Review Date: March 8, 2000
Reviewer: ,
In this wonderful, inspiring book, Janet Luhrs provides myriad ideas for and insight into how simplifying your life can help you shift gears or even start over from scratch. The book offers loads of practical advice about how to implement changes in your life and escape the cycle of work, consumption, debt, and stress.

The author states at the outset that the book provides a variety of options for those interested in simplifying. Some of these options--like living off the grid or on a boat--will appeal to only a small number of people. However, the great stories from real people's lives do make you think about your job, house, and possessions and how you could streamline. Most of the suggestions (e.g., improving eating and exercising habits and better managing money and time) can be implemented by anyone.

I recently read Elaine St. James's Living the Simple Life and found it wanting and often impractical--foregoing sunglasses and wearing only three colors of clothing are not helpful suggestions to me! This book also focuses solely on the changes St. James and her husband made, with little mention of the wide spectrum of alternative approaches.

Luhrs's book differs by providing a vast array of resources, in addition to using life stories to outline approaches that folks have successfully employed to create more time, less stress, and more joy in their lives.

Buy this book and take from it the inspiration to help you realize who you really are!

read "Your Money or Your Life"

Reviewer: Wyote, Seoul
First of all, if you haven't read "Your Money or Your Life" already, just click over. That's the classic, the essential, and this is just an accessory. That's why there's 4 stars here: just to distinguish this from that. This book is for those continuing in simplicity, not getting started. If you read the negative reviews, I think you can tell that they started in the wrong place, and that some of them misunderstood "simplicity."

I am not the typical "voluntary simplicity" guy. VS is not about living on $2/day. It's about financial awareness and choices. I've thought about it, and I want to look like I spent about a thousand dollars getting dressed everyday.

But that requires choices, since I don't make $365,000 annually. Not, um, quite. That's what "simplicity" taught me. I don't need to buy an espresso machine, a blender, a dishwaher, a microwave, an MP3 player, or a car. My mobile phone is a dinosaur. I buy the cheapest coffee when my friends and I go to a coffee shop. When we go to a bar, I drink slowly, and thus less (but I buy good beer). I often buy used books, and they look better on the shelf anyway. I do my own laundry, and shine my own shoes. I work out at home rather than buy a gym membership. I eat fruit for lunch. I don't have children, and won't for a long time--the implicit trade-off: I might not live to see grandchildren. I prefer to make my dates dinner and rent a movie rather than go out. I bought my couch used, but it is far more romantic than a theater! And I am no chef, but I can whip up a tiramisu. The VS movement has certainly made me more romantic. I'd like a bigger apartment, but....

On the other hand, I have handmade Italian shoes, wool jackets, silk ties and satin sheets. I turn the heat way down in winter and wear sweaters in my house: each month I save enough to buy a first-rate pair of boxers! (No joke!) That's choices--and that's what voluntary simplicity is all about. You don't give up anything you love: but you choose what you love over what you like. (And hey, as for simplicity: a well-cared for $400 pair of shoes should last at least ten years. I have only one pair of black oxfords, and I won't buy another for many years. Hand wash those knit socks. Etc.)

Although none of my friends can tell, I'm one of these VS folks. I still put about a grand a month into savings. I do shop carefully before I buy clothing, actually taking notes with a notebook, so that I make good choices, and I buy on sale. I recently changed jobs: taking a small (about 15%) pay-cut in exchange for substantially less work (about 50%). No one questioned that, actually! At least not to my face. But anyway, it was MY choice; or rather, my CHOICE.

Everybody's at a different point in life: for some people, VS means telling their kids they can't have a Playstation, or buying generic cereal in bulk, or learning to boil macaroni rather than hitting Taco Bell, and that's a situation far different from mine. But I really believe everybody should check out this VS stuff. It certainly won't hurt.

As far as lifestyle goes: choose for yourself. You don't have to buy second-hand clothes to be a "true" VSer. This isn't asceticism. Do you love fine wine? Do you want a classic Harley? Choose what you love, and live in a way that enables you to have it. That's voluntary simplicity.
Simple ideas lead to simple living

Reviewer: StalkingGhostBear, Michigan, USA
We dream of a good life, one that is not cluttered by mounting stress, by deadlines, by worries about money. We dream of a more fulfilling way to live. Unfortunately simple living is an art that one probably never truly achieves, but I think journey is far more important than the goal itself. "The Simple Living Guide" is a guide to beginning your own journey to a simpler and more fulfilling life. While the book can be read as a whole, cover to cover, it seems to read best when broken down into its individual chapters. The reader is invited to begin their process of simplification where and when they are ready leaving other area for later. I began my journey three years ago dealing with the clutter that I, and so many other Americans, gather around ourselves for no other reason than it is expected to have more than we need. Cleaning and exorcising my home of useless kitchen appliances, clothes I could no longer wear, and knick knacks pretending to be works of art was a painful process but one made easier by Ms. Luhrs book. Cleaning out my home led me to simplify my budget, and then to simplify my leisure activities, and most recently to simplify my career.

Ms. Luhrs presents us with the fact that simplifying is a process. One cannot just simplify one area of life and call it good. Every time you change and improve one area it radiates and effects every other area of your life. For example once you start simplifying your budget to save money it leads you to question how you spend your time, where you live, your quality of life, even the birthday gifts you give.

The entire book is written in a warm, personal manner, often if feels as if one is having a conversation with the author rather than reading text. The advice presented is not only practical advice but philosophic or spiritual advice as well. Inner simplicity means thinking some thoughts that are occasionally rather deep. The fact that there is philosophy presented in this book is not a detraction from the book but a distinct positive. There are books about saving money and managing time out there but Ms. Luhrs asks us to pause a moment and ask just what we want from more money or more time. Life changes are always easier when you have an idea of where you are going and why you are making the journey in the first place

"The Simple Living Guide" invites you to take your time, to think about your life and to grow while you simplify. What could be more simple?

Living in the Sidebars

Review Date: July 21, 2002
Reviewer: Virginia Lore, Seattle, WA United States
Janet Luhrs brings her experience as the editor of Simple Living: The Journal of Voluntary Simplicity to the Simple Living Guide. Over 400 pages, this compendium of ideas for "less stressful, more joyful living" is heavy on the many philosophical ideas that fall under the simple living umbrella. In 14 topical chapters ranging from Money to Virtues Luhrs balances her occasionally redundant reflections with sidebars highlighting case studies, offering tips, and providing the nuts & bolts how-to's. Some of these are tremendously helpful and/or interesting. For example, in the chapter on Simple Pleasures and Romance, there is an article by Kirk S. Nevin about his family's decision to live without electricity or plumbing; and the chapter on Inner Simplicity includes a very practical article on dealing with insomnia.

Other sidebars are less helpful, more a mish-mash of 12-step generalisms, such as Luhrs' list of the 28 secrets to happiness, including "get organized," "be humble" and "learn from the past, plan for the future, and live in the present".

My two primary criticisms are that most of the ideas in this book are available elsewhere (see The Tightwad Gazette or Your Money or Your Life) and that some ideas aren't included. There is almost nothing here about permaculture, for example, and very little attempt at introducing serious or radical sustainability.

This book is a great primer for people who may have never encountered simple living philosophies before; however, those steeped in an already-intentional lifestyle will find little here that is new.

Is 439 pages really simplicity?

Reviewer: Douglas Kendrick, Valencia, CA, USA
Some time ago, I purchased this book as I embarked upon my own personal quest to simplify my life. Somehow, I couldn't believe that a 400+ page, inch-thick tome would be necessary to guide me on that path. It has taken me over a year to read this book and I'm left with my initial first impression intact--why can 'simplicity' be made so complicated? This book is an incredibly dense read. There is so much information, so many statistics, so many examples and philosophy and suggestions that it leaves your head swimming. Some portions of it are so didactic that I felt like I was back in college doing a required reading assignment.

To be completely fair, I do feel that The Simple Living Guide does indeed accomplish what its subtitle of "A sourcebook for less stressful, more joyful living" would suggest. It is a great SOURCEBOOK. With all this information packed in one place, it has become a useful reference and "jumping off point" for further study. On many occasions I've used the book to get a fresh perspective, find more in-depth information or contact outside organizations. Nearly everything you could possibly want to ferret out is in there somewhere.

But if you're looking for a practical, day-to-day guidebook or introduction to the Voluntary Simplicity lifestyle, this is NOT it. A truly simple (and small) book like "Simplify Your Life" or "Living The Simple Life" by Elaine St. James is far more practical and user-friendly. After you're already on the road to simplification and want to deepen your commitment or understanding, that would be the time for The Simple Living Guide.

Full of ideas

This book is full of great ideas for people following the simple living path. The author's essential thesis, although never explicitly stated, is that to live simply, we must consciously consider every consequence of the every decision we make. If we are unhappy with our current money/family/housing/health conditions, we need to realize that these conditions are the result of decisions we made in the past. To live a better life, we need to make better decisions and often a simpler option is the better choice.

Along these lines, the author points out how going along with the average American middleclass lifestyle of large house, large debts, high fat diet, and too much TV is neither fun nor healthy. She suggests countless alternatives, but more importantly, stresses that each person needs to make the choice himself or herself. Even if a person chooses to go along with the usual average American habit, that's not necessarily bad, as long as he or she makes the choice consciously and is content with all of the consequences.

This book doesn't have a lot of specific money advice on how to live a simple life. For this, a reader might look to a book like "Your Money or Your Life". Instead, its strength lies in helping the reader to develop a personal philosophy towards living simply, as well as providing ideas. To provide encouragement, each chapter ends with a short case history of a successful simplicity family story.

Great Guide Full of Ideas - Not a perfect book, however

I am in my mid-twenties and a graduate student. I have, for a very long time, wanted to save more money and live a life that is less driven by getting things done and one that is more focused on living life right now and enjoying those things that are important to me. I think a lot of time the right book comes along at the right time in our lives, and for me, this book was it. It provides lots of ideas - some about being just a little more simple and some that are about pretty drastic changes. Another reviewer is right that this is not likely a book that people who want to live very radically simple lives would find valuable. This is for folks who still want electricity, maybe a car, some nice "things," and so on. I found it very readable with lots of ideas, and also a very exciting philosophy - driving home the idea that we lose sight of the point of life - that for most people, it doesn't make sense to work a lot, to get lots of money, to get a bigger house and lots of stuff. Rather, we can be more content (and have a lighter environmental impact) by working only as much as we need to in order to meet the needs that are basic and the needs that are most important to us. Thus, if having a nice car is important, save for that and cut down on expensive clothes. It encourages you to thin of life in terms of tradeoffs. If I work 50 hours a week, I can have a big house, but much less time to live in it or be with family. Is this worth it. It also helps to counter conventional wisdom about the kind of money it takes to live a "decent" life. It challenges assumptions and offers new way to think about things. The book did not come across as preachy to me. I think you can take from it what is helpful in your life - it is like a sourcebook or reference book. Take what works for you and leave the rest. I highly recommend it.
Simple Living Bible

I signed up for a Barnes and Noble online course on Simple Living that used this book. I checked out a copy of this book from the library (I was already frugal, before buying the book!) and sat down to begin the course. After about five minutes, I realized that there were far too many people signed up for the course. It would take me hours just to read my fellow "classmates" posts. So, in an attempt to bring greater simplicity to my life, I dropped the course! Turned off by the bland cover of the book and its hefty size, I went to return it to the library. In the parking lot of the library, I took one last look at it. It drew me in. Instead of returning it, I have kept it and renewed it several times. The book is now on my wishlist for my birthday next month.

Many of the ideas in the book were familiar to me, but I enjoyed having "amen" moments with the author. On top of what I already knew, I learned much more. I also found that each chapter provided a wealth of references to other resources where I could explore the ideas further. I began to tell my husband that this was the simple living bible. It had all the good advice on how to live a simple and compassionate life.

As for reviewers who had a hard time getting through the book, I would say that it isn't really meant to be read cover-to-cover. I read one chapter at a time, and will refer back to chapters, as needed. I would highly recommend this book.

A lot of people, including myself, have designated as their New Years resolution to simplify and enjoy what they have. This book is the best instructional guide to getting more out of life and finding happiness in simplicity. Luhrs has taken all the wisdom that she has gleaned from her Simple Living magazine and placed it in this book. The book is divided into different chapters such as health, money, food etc and includes articles from newspapers and magazines, profiles in simplicity (people, movements, organizations), checklists, and of course advice. Some tips I have obtained is to save my money to retire early, make priorities, control aggression and stress, embrace the slow food movement (opposite of fast and convenient foods), and be more mindful of my surroundings. I have enjoyed simple things again such as preparing vegetables for soup, or just walking my dog. I like how Luhrs also has included a lot of references to Scott and Helen Nearing who are my heroes (they are symbolic of the back to earth movement). The advice Luhrs includes are very easy to fall back on. I know that I reflect on my purchases and the time I have spent differently. Plus you do feel better when you take the time to pause and relish your relationships, money, food, clothing, family etc. This is really a great book to start you on a slower more fufilling life.
Good for the"common folk".Great if you live in Yuppie Land.

As I turned the corner into my fifties I realized that I really did not want to or need to strive as much to have more junk. I was also on a trendmill of buy, send, buy send and buy send some more. This book has really centered me and made me realize that I had better wake up if I want anything positive to be there for my retirement. I may be a little on the late side. The book seems to focus on a younger more educated cliential, and this is my big beef. I am a well paid blue collar worker. I cannot get a sabbatical nor can I just up and leave for the great outback. The reality of it is that most of us are "stuck" in one way or another and are not as talented or educated as the people that Luhr's interviewed for the book. The plus side of the book are the many tips and constant self talk that can help one realize that we do have some choices and even if we do have good paying dead end jobs we can change in many ways to improve our lives.

If you are living in a large metropolitan area, wearing designer clothing and drinking $5.00 cups of coffee while chatting on your internet enabled handheld--then by all means buy this book! It was written for you and will, no doubt, help you simplify your life tremendously. However--if you are an average american--perhaps with a college degree and a family and a car that is more than three years old--think twice before buying this book. It has a lot of practical advice--don't get me wrong--but it is so common sense that most of you already do these things. Because, like most of us, you have to do them in order to pay the bills and feed the kids.

But the rest of you prada wearing people out there--put that coffee cup down and run out to pick up this book. You'll be happy you did.

Simply put, this book, along with The Complete Tightwad Gazette, have changed my life radically. The best part of this book is the constant reassurance that each journey is different from others and that it is up to me to figure out what is best for my life. So many other "simple" books made me feel that if I didn't do it exactly their way, I was a failure at simple living. I especially enjoyed reading about others and their journeys; this made the whole subject more real for me.
Way Too Complicated

Review Date: May 16, 2006
Reviewer: EternalSeeker, Albuquerque, NM USA
The key to simple living is to simplify your life.

I don't think the author has really figured that out yet, because this book tries to cover sooooo much information and sooooo many ideas that it just misses the whole notion of simplicity. It made me tired just to try to read it (and I am a very avid reader!).

While the author means well, and has some good advice for those just beginning to try to find a simpler way of life, she tries to retain ALL the facets of life you may possibly want to ever consider trying to "simplify". It reminds me of those alternative "light" recipes for overly rich foods: the real point isn't to create less caloric forms of the recipes, the point is to stop eating that kind of food.

Simplify, simplify! I am afraid as an old practioner of voluntary simplicity I was confused and depressed by this book, which seems to offer very little in the way of true simplification and much in the way of things-I-didn't-know-I-should-be-worrying-about.

Simplicity:
Get rid of anything you haven't used within the past year.
Pay off your credit cards and just keep one or two for real emergencies.
Be monogamous.
Give your time instead of money to those you love.
Turn off the TV.
Think about how to live with only half of the possessions you have and then DO IT.
Eat fresh, simple, whole [organic] foods. Drink water.
Create a garden and spend time in it (instead of watching TV).
Let other people worry about "getting ahead", status trips, newer cars and bigger houses, trendy clothing.
Read: How To Make Your House Do The Housework.

If your kids don't like it, they can complicate their lives all they want when they grow up, but at least they will know how to LIVE first.

Oh, yeah. Read 'Walden' By Henry David Thoreau - often.
A Wonderful Guide to Simplifying Your Life

Reading this book made we literally want to sell my house in the big city and buy a small cottage out in the country. The idea of living my life based on what is important to me (family, spirituality, working with abused animals) is something that has become my new life's focus from reading this book. I've already started getting rid of my excess clutter and I feel less of a prisoner now to all my "stuff." I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this book and am now using what I gleaned to make my life more simplified and much more enjoyable. Even the kids are enjoying the changes (and I thought this was going to be my hardest challenge). The reason they are embracing this fairly easily is because the less time I have to spend taking care of all the other inanimate stuff in my life, the more time I have to spend with them. Now, that is something worth spending my time on. Thank you Ms. Luhr's for opening my eyes to a whole new world in front of me.
Truly An Excellent Sourcebook

This is by far the best and most comprehensive guide I've read on the subject of simple living. If you're looking for something more in a deeply religious, Zen or philosophical vein, you should go elsewhere. But what I appreciated most about Luhrs' approach was her constant reminder that BALANCE is the key for most of us. She avoids the preachy tone many authors fall into on this subject, and tends to stay on the practical plane. The resources listed at the end of each chapter are worth the price of the book alone, where I found many titles I didn't know about. So if you want to go deeper, go lighter, or in another direction, you'll certainly find something in the resource guides. Very nicely written, too.
An inspiring read

Kudos to Ms. Luhr for writing this book. She places a strong emphasis on emotional and spiritual values and how they tie into one's finances. I especially appreciated Ch. 11, which goes into detail about alternative housing. She even profiles a woman who built a house for $4000. Which would you rather have, a simple, modest, but paid off house or a 30-year mortgage that straps you into a lousy job for the next 30 years? It's something to ponder, at any rate.

She shows the readers that they do, in fact, have options to blindly pursuing the "American Dream" or is it the American Nightmare? If the whole world consumed at the rate of us Americans, we'd need 4 planet earths to support all the consumption.

She shows us that it is possible to scale down and be completely at peace with the world and ourselves. Less can indeed be more, far more.

This book ranges from RADICAL to SIMPLE ways to make your life what you want & need for it to be! Lots of "Food for Thought", great examples on what others have done to change & simplify their lives. Some of the reasons why, were infomative, as how they did it. This certainly isn't for everyone, but it is a great help for US who have a need for more DELIBERATE LIVING. Many of the steps were taken over periods of time. I didn't get the impression One needed to sale all thier worldly goods & go live in a cave,(well if it would make you happy), but offered real ways to enchance , enjoy, live life fuller...ie. Be Happier & Healthier with your self & future. Blessed be.

I haven't even finished reading this book yet, but I can already say that I have not found a better book on the subject of living a simple, reasonable and fulfilled life. It might take a while to absorb the abundance of material and tips presented here, but for me, every time I open this book, it is like sneaking into a room full of goodies that make your eyes glow. I live in Germany and not all the tips are applicable to me, but there sure is enough for everyone; this topic is universal. I especially recommend the comprehensive lists of books and resources at the end of each chapter. Thank you, Janet.

I received this book two days ago and I cannot put it down. It has so many good ideas and new perspectives. This book is not just about "living simply," a phrase which may carry negative or lukewarm connotations for some readers. It is a book about living well and living fully, whatever that means to each individual reader. Luhrs presents her ideas, gives examples from her own life or from the lives of others, and then leaves the rest up to the reader. Her philosophy does not come across as heavy-handed.

I have skipped around to many of the different chapters, and have appreciated them all. Of particular note are the chapters on money, inner simplicity, cooking and nutrition, and health and exercise. Her ideas about "I don't have time for (fill in the blank)" are so useful. So often we go through life on "automatic pilot," to use Luhrs' phrase. The question is often not "do I have time" but really "do I want to." Luhrs encourages and challenges her readers to actually make choices in life, not just make excuses.

This book is a gem. I will be using and adapting Luhrs' ideas in my own life. If you are at all searching in your life, do consider reading this book.

Thought provoking.. take what you want from it.

I found the book very insightful, if a little fanatical. I don't think (as some reviewers do) that the author was trying to advocate that everyone live a highly simple lifestyle in a small house, but the examples are good for making one realize that we don't *need* all the things that we think we do, like a large house or even indoor plumbing. I really like the format of the book, because its sections allow me to read a little bit on something when I feel like it and not search through dense text. I find it to be a useful book on simplifying your life, even if I can't or won't do many of the things she suggests.
Intelligent, informative, flexible, soul-searching.

Unlike what other readers have described, Luhr's book is not extremist: in fact, the author gives numerous examples of others who use some basic strategies of Simple Living who are not on the lower scale of income. It seems that the point of the book has been missed for those readers. Rather, Luhr makes us ask ourselves a difficult question: what really IS important to you in life? No answer is definitely given. Instead, Luhr gives us a path in which to explore its possibilities, and the rich and spiritual depths of our own inner nature.

This book should be renamed The Simplifying Bible! I read this many years ago (probably 15), and it is one of the books that I continue to take off the shelf to re-read. It is also one of the books most borrowed from my shelf. Be prepared to buy a couple of copies, because people will just "forget" to give it back! Excellent writing, and covers every aspect of simplifying your life. Should be required reading for everyone in our consumer-crazy culture. I'm gonna go start reading mine again right now!

This is really the best book if you are trying to simplify your life. I have read many others, and although they all have good points, this book gets to the heart of the matter. There are also many examples of how to make your life more simple and enjoy it more.

If you are looking to join the simple living movement, start with this book first. Then, if you are hooked get some others, they will just help you with what you have already learned. I wish everyone would read this book, we may just have a better world if they did. It is nice to have the focus off of consumer spending and keeping up with the latest trends, and putting the focus back on the simple pleasures in life.

This book by far is one of my all time favorates. I had no idea how much more frugal I could deliberately be and feel good about it. Ms. Luhrs addresses almost every important part of peoples lives that can be improved or modified deliberately and by choice. However the book can be a stretch for those, who just love lavish luxury, those who live is big expensive cities and not likely to want to change.

When I picked up this book, I thought it would be a book about reorganizing my closet and simplifying my financial life. You know-- a few tips here and there. It is, and it isn't.

It elevates the concept of living a simple and modest life almost to a religious fervor then dives into chapter after chapter of examples, inspirational anecdotes, and how-to information. It made me reevaluate why I had a cell phone and pager (and other financial decisions I had made).

Although I never quit my job and went to live in a cave, I did take control of my situation and made some smart decisions, which prepared me for the technology downturn. Some of my ex-coworkers weren't so lucky.

Luhrs has created an inspirational handbook on how to simplifying your life from the ground up, albeit with a philosophical bent.

Full of very useful information

Covers housing alternatives, ideas for travelling cheap, shaving money off your food bill, how to garden anywhere, creative employment ideas, and more... all geared to help readers reduce expenses, break free from today's American debt albatross, and thus have the freedom to live the life they choose. Includes lots of real life examples of people who are doing just that, along with an extensive list of additional resources on each topic. Great inspiration!
Excellent book with valuable bibliography of other resources

The voluntary simplicity movement is producing quite a few books, and this is probably one of the best. It not only provides excellent thoughts on various ways to simplify one's life, it also includes at the end of each chapter an annotated bibliography of resources--other books, magazines, organizations, Web sites, etc. This is probably the one to get first.

Second to the Bible, this is the most important book I have ever read. On the other hand, I appreciate that it wasn't at all religious or overly philosophical; not hard to swallow. Before I read this book, I had never even thought of some of the mindless mundanities I automatically waste time doing/being/thinking/buying just because I live here, in America, for one thing, and because it seems the way! What a trap materialism is! I have a four year old. She will never be this age again. Today will never be repeated! Live it! Cut out the over-busi-ness!!! This book is balanced and NOT extreme or at all ascetic. Best possible gift for graduates, newly marrieds, and new moms.

A lovely book. I read it in two days, then reread it and am reading it now again. Great tips and insights on what frugality is all about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels that his or her life has become too complicated and who wants to bring back fun and joy in his or her life and settle down with outwardly less but inwardly more. 5 stars simply isn't enough for this pearl.
FREE YOURSELVES FROM ECONOMIC SLAVERY - READ THIS BOOK

After reading this book, you will see that you are nothing but an economic slave to the multitudes of businesses who clamor for your dollar each day of each year.

This work shows you how to have more for less and how to have more money while having more at the same time.

Simplify, streamline and downsize and refine your needs is the hallmark of this work. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SUFFER AND DO WITHOUT you just have to revise how you **DO**

My wife brought me this book after she had read it and it changed my entire viewpoint on how we should do things.

After banging our heads against an impenetrable wall to "keep up with the Jonses" and exhausting years of hard earned savings, it was simply time to do something else.

This book illuminated the way for us.

It is an easy read that can be done very quickly. It will show you some things and give you some ideas that may have never occurred to you.

Of course, if you are still caught up in the rat race and live it, then you certianly are not ready for this book.

If you have BEEN in the rat race and have had your measure of success and find that it simply is not enough because you STILL DON'T HAVE ENOUGH then

YOU ARE READY FOR THIS BOOK.
Good for you if I have to cram it down your throat

True, there's good advice in these pages, and it's presented in a convenient digest format (all of this territory has been covered before, by among others, Don Aslett, Jane Brody, and Thoreau). My problem is the author's self-righteous tone; although she begins, promisingly enough, by saying that "simple living has nothing to do with your level of income," she soon makes it clear that she will brook no slaggards, and that the leaner your existence, the better your person. Amy Dacyczn, the founder of the Tightwad Gazette, is pretty hardcore on the subject of paring down to the basics, yet her books are written with good humor and an awareness that she is, indeed, on the fanatical fringe; she is much more tolerant of the fact that people march to different drummers, something Luhr preaches but does not seem to really believe. If you enjoy being lectured, Simple Living will give you several days' worth.

I picked up this book at the library by chance. Once I began reading it I couldn't put it down. I agree with most of what the author writes, although I do realize that I am not interested in following all of her advice. The most helpful sections for me were on money and working. I feel very stressed out about "making it," but after reading this book I've begun to reevaluate my idea of success. That alone has been helpful. I've already bought a copy to keep on my bookshelf for whenever I need a lift.

I bought this book almost 2 years ago and unlike many books I buy, this one doesn't sit on the bookshelf collecting dust. I read it cover to cover the week I bought it and frequently reference it. The examples Ms. Luhrs provides are practical and the overall attitude of the book is encouraging and realistic. I suggest this book to anyone who wants to get motivated to live a more simple life.

This is a wonderful reference book that just happens to also have interesting anecdotes, case studies, etc. Should be required reading for everyone even considering a simpler, more rewarding life. There are chapters for how to make this work for couples, families with children, singles, everyone! It also addresses the inner life as well as the outer (financial/ecological) life issues. Don't be afraid to jump around in the book to get what you need, when you need it. This is not a book you have to read straight-through, cover-to-cover, although if you do, you'll learn heaps!

I like this book because it puts everything in perspective of what one can do just to live simply. While is was written pre-9/11, many of the stories listed can still be applied right now, when everything is under the pretense of buy more, buy bigger (gas crisis not excluded), many of the principals can be applied when it feels like life is just too much, and stuff is taking over in multiple quantities.

I recommend this book as well as "Your Money or Your Life". You will find that you will refer to both books, time and time again to set you on a more purposeful path in life.

I love this book! It is full of useful suggestions in almost all areas of daily living. As someone who has become all too aware of the society of consumption in which we live, this book offers so many practical suggestions for bringing life more into balance and learning to value that which is genuninely important. It also offers many additional resources at the end of each chapter. I think this book should be mandatory reading for every high school senior. I wish I had been able to read it years ago. But better late then never!

You may have seen Simple Living at the supermarket checkout. It is a really well designed and edited magazine. This text, written before the author began to create the magazine, is a very good basic text on living simply. I liked the interviews, her analogies of how we live at times and can possibly reduce our need for other things. I liked the way the book was organized, in simple logical chapters including money, inner simplicity, time, travel, clutter and others very logically chosen. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "Our time famine is really an intimacy famine. It is much easier to stay busy and frantic than it is to love and know ourselves and others happy. Think NYC after 9/11.

Janet Luhres opens the door for any person, family, or group to simplify their way of life. Abundant references and resources are listed for further study, yet the simplicity of her recommendations bring us back to the important reasons we are working and why we should or should not continue on the path we are following. A must read for anyone who is serious about simplifying their life and increasing its richness.

Not only does this book offer clear-cut, thoughtful ideas on how to simplify your life, but it is so in-depth! At the end of each chapter, the author provides a list of books and other resources to help you delve further into simplifying. Some of the ideas are radical, but she only offers them as examples...Ms. Luhrs shows readers that simplification can be achieved on all levels.
Good fundamental theories

I highly recommend the first several chapters of this book. I agree to most of the theories, especially the chapter on spending. If most people lived "below their means" as this book recommends, they wouldn't be forced to get that paycheck doing something they don't truly love for a living. Happiness is found, in part, by doing something you enjoy for a living. However, the chapters near the end regarding food and housing, are a bit on the radical side to me. For those looking for a truly simplified life, these last couple of chapters would apply. Overall, I would recommend it.

The author touches on everything from meditation to housing and work to physical health and travel. Scattered throughout are examples of people who are following their own path to simplicity. There are tips on saving on travel that I've never seen elsewhere. The author has also included tons of references so you know where to go to do more reading. I think this is a great resource for anyone just embarking on a journey of simplicity. It's full of ideas and inspiration that will help you on your way.

My only gripe is that the financial sections are dated. Some of it seems quite naive in light of the recent financial crisis. For example, pay yourself first is still a very important concept but the advice on where to invest is almost comical given the recent upheaval. Additionally, many of the economic assumptions are flawed. Nearly all the examples on savings, investment, and compound interest assume a 10-15% return on investment. Who, besides the credit card companies, actually gets that kind of return anymore? Of course hindsight is 20/20, but that same hindsight could be used to rewrite the financial sections -- which is sorely needed.

So personally I highly recommend this book, but advise that you supplement the financial advice with more recent sources.

This book is full of amazing suggestions and resources in simple living. Luhrs defines simplicity as conscious, deliberate living, "stopping for a moment and asking what the heck we are doing with our lives". After this introduction, she then went to talk about time, money, inner simplicity, work, simple pleasures and romance, virtues, families, holidays, cooking and nutrition, health and exercise, housing, clutter, gardening, and travel. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of books, websites, and other resources to help us learn more about the topic. What's helpful was her short summary in each of the resources she listed.

Though I wish there is a new edition of this book with updated resources, I continue to reread and use this book as a reference. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in living more consciously and taking as little as possible from this earth that we share.

This book is a very practical reference guide for all families who wish to focus on a more simple living style. It's chapters are well divided and permits the reader to read only those of interest. Most importantly this book does not preach and keeps it's suggestions at a very practical level.

I found the first chapter of this book detailing the concept of Simple Living and the second involving money as it applies to this concept quite thought provoking. It encourages one to evaluate priorities and to avoid being enslaved to things; the idea being the more "stuff" you have, the more you have to work to pay for it, the more time you have to invest to maintain it, etc. The remaining chapters became redundant and boring.

This was the first book I read, and by far the best. It starts out mellow, talking about the reasons/philosophy, and move on to easy / practical suggestions to radical ones (like eco-friendly housing). Reading this book I feel that I have many options -- it makes moving towards the goal manageable and personal.

In general I loved this book and got a lot of great ideas for my life. I plan to keep it and reread parts every so often. I especially enjoyed the section on holidays. However, the whole first part of the book relates to finances and investing using examples that worked in the 90's but could never work today in this market and economy. The problem is that much of the point of the book kind of depends on this saving and investing, so it can leave you somewhat depressed realizing you can never achieve what she's telling you to do.

I love this book because it said it all. We have different views about simplicity & these are only guidelines not rules written in stone.
Saving is important because in this country, a lot of people are up to neck about debt, really it is hard to make ends meet, whether one is single or married w/ children. A lot of books are in sync w/ this book like , Richard Foster's " Freedom of Simplicity" or Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach. They are also must read. It will really help make a life lighter if we are only content w/ what is basic.

The chapters about work and money were helpful, but all the examples of "simple living" were too impractical for most people. While the definition of voluntary simplicity is alleged fluid, why give the most extreme examples of people building adobe houses without indoor plumbing? The author talked too much about spirituality and quasi-religious matters. Just stick to the hints, please.

This is my favorite book in the world! Is that sacrilegious? That I'm a Christian and didn't say the Bible? tee hee. Anyway, I love that it describes simplicity in all the different catagories- clutter, housing, finances, etc. Simplicity is multi-faceted and the more I embrace it the happier I am. Also, I grew up learning about Henry David Thoreau, but this book helped me to understand him as a philosopher I really admire.

Yes, you will find lots of money saving ideas here, but this book and the lifestyle it promotes, will appeal mainly to miserly types. You needn't beat yourself up for every penny you spend, nor should you reduce your entire life to a mad hunt for additional money saving ideas. If you spend as much time planning a sensible investment approach, you will enjoy life more and come out ahead in the end. And you just might become rich--and guilt free!

Younger Mama

Review Date: January 27, 2007
Reviewer: M.V. Baker, NJ
At 32 years old and the mom of an 18 month old, I was looking for something to motivate me to lose those few stubborn extra pounds. I wasn't really expecting to look younger, but to FEEL younger with the extra weight off. I was immediately drawn to Dr. Bravermans belief on the importance of a well balanced "rainbow" diet. I often give my son better quality food compared to what I was puting in my mouth during the day. The rainbow diet is easy to follow and I never run out of things to satisfy my appetite. This book gave me the motivation to eat well everyday, and to take the proper supplements that would "prevent" various "pauses" in the future. I not only have lost weight, but feel so much more energized, and my "mental fog" is lifting. I want to live the healthiest life I can for my family, and this book helped me realize that the Brain and it's chemistry really can effect the future of my wellbeing. As an Acupuncturist, I strongly believe in preventive care, and this book really teaches you how to prevent dis-ease easily at any age! THANK YOU Dr.Braverman for motivating me to be the youngest me possible. This book was a breeze to go thru, and I really enjoyed taking my personal test. I am highly recommending this book to my patients, family and friends.

Without a doubt the most comprehensive book I've found on the holistic practice of medicine. And this book IS about medicine, AND a wholesome "Rainbow Diet", as he calls it (but varied according to your particular malady), AND the use of the far superior bioidentical hormones, AND most important of all, the connection and absolute interdependency of brain and body! There's probably very little in this book that your own various physicians don't already know, but the organization and application of the knowledge certainly appear to me to be a completely different and a far more effective concept. However, it sort of excludes all the specialists. Or so they would probably think. Only GPs need apply. And Oh, if we only had more GPs like this Dr. Eric Braverman! When was the last time your GP ordered blood work to determine ALL of your hormone levels? And what physician does NOT know the importance of adequate and balanced hormones in each patient? The nephrologists will think, "That's not my problem". The orthopedists will think, "That's not my problem". Even the cardiologists will probably think, "That's not my problem." WRONG! And if you ask about vitamin therapy they usually say, "There are plenty of good multivitamins over the counter, by all means it can't hurt for you to try one". And if you ask about herbs? Go on; just ask your doctor what herbs would help your condition. He'll probably act like herbs are either some kind of voodoo, or are totally insignificant. WRONG AGAIN! Dr. Braverman said so. READ IT. You'll like it. It addresses ANY condition you could possibly have, and plenty that you didn't even know that you have. I'm serious. This is preventive medicine at it's best. And it just MIGHT lead you to a much healthier, happier, more productive AND longer life. It can't get much better than that!
Would You Like To Look And Feel Younger?

Don't we all wish to not just appear younger, but to also feel younger?

Younger You promises to help the reader unlock the hidden power of your brain to look and feel 15 years younger. The author, Eric R. Braverman, M.D. is the director of the Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH) Medical Center in New York. Younger You has received positive comments from notable doctor-authors: Nicholas Perricone, Isadore Rosenfeld, and David Perlmutter.

Younger You is broken into 6 parts:

1. Your ageprint--you're only as old as your oldest part. Disease occurs in stages so catch problems early with suggested ultrasounds for proper treatment. Braverman recommends the usage of bioidentical hormones; supplementation--zinc, fish oil, and others; follow a diet rich in fruits and vegetables; exercise. This section includes ageprint quizzes to help the reader identify problems within the body and begin him on the path to wellness.
2. Your brain as the key--lack of dopamine, a brain-produced chemical, lowers energy, affecting the rest of the body. Braverman explains the correlation between the brain and obesity, offering several possibilities of solution. The seven stages of cognitive decline, the loss of GABA, and the relation of Serotonin to happiness are pointed out and effective methods to counter undesirable conditions are discussed.
3. The overworked cardiovascular system--referred to as "cardiopause" by Braverman, it is the slowing and aging of the heart. An estimated 700,000 Americans will have a heart attack this year. Braverman asserts that the condition can be reversed. The top five risk factors include family history, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol.
4. The modulating systems--includes thyropause (the weakening of metabolism), immunopause (the inability to fight infection)
5. Aging Sexuality--relates to, hormones, menopause for women and andropause for men.
6. Your Aging Frame: Bones, Muscles, and Skin--bone and muscle loss are not inevitable, but must be addressed instead.

Key concepts of Younger You:

* Conventional medicine is equivalent to an assembly line, only viewing parts of the body for treatment, rather than using an integrative whole-person approach.
* Virtually all illness and disease can be detected from the outside.
* When one part of the body fails, it signals an aging code to the rest of the body, which responds in kind.
* Each part of the body has markers for aging. These are the warning signs.
* Diagnostic testing pinpoints the aging code of every organ.

Throughout Younger You, Braverman shows the reader which natural supplements and their dosages will help for each condition/disease. He also suggests new research to support testing. A good example from p. 166 "Minor leaks of protein in your urine (albuminuria) is an early indicator of stroke or heart attack." Interspersed, Braverman also refers to various types of food, explaining how certain foods benefit or harm the body.

Considered to be a book about wellness, Younger You is also about antiaging. It represents recent discoveries in research which can be directly applied for life-saving benefits. Younger You helps the reader find out what his/her real bodily age is and understand how to act on this knowledge.

Just released as a paperback, Younger You has been made more affordable for everyone to reap the benefits of Dr. Eric R. Braverman's knowledge.

I didn't like the book.If you are willing to get a lot of medical tests including a complete head-to-toe ultrasound and if needed take biochemical hormones, antidepressants, anxiety and pain medications, do not worry about the side effects of medications, getting re-tested by your doctor then you're following the author's recommendations. I do hope you have a good insurance plan or the means to pay. I'll be fair. He does write about taking supplements, eating a healthy diet, having good sleep habits, and reducing stress but most of us know that without reading the book. Do your own homework.

A few years ago I read The Edge Effect and got impressed with the work of Dr Braverman. Now in "Younger You" I found even more evidence that feeling younger... and getting younger is a feasible option for just about everyone. Each of us can reach for a longer and healthier old age by applying what Dr Braverman outlines in such eloquent way.
The AgePrint worksheet in this book is incredible useful and directs you immediately to the core problems or pauses you may have in aging. To go beyond what is in the book, I found it useful to download the more elaborate AgePrint Worksheet from www.pathmed.com.
Reading this book made me feel younger and has changed my priorities!

I love this book for the way it goes at the idea of "quick fitness" that everyone is overpowered with on television. The same meatheads that used all kinds of pills, powders and other ways to do what they wouldn't just work to get are the ones leading the charge.

Dr Braverman is taking it right where it needs to be. If you want to be good and get better then start to work and keep it going. Some use the term motivation but what we all call motivation is really nothing but the most hated word in the english language - discipline.

Thanks for the great book Dr Braverman.

I saw Dr. Braverman on PBS and was immediately hooked. His message is powerful and I can't wait to use some of his principles to start to feel better and younger. He covers more than just skin and all the stuff I've heard before and tells you how to rejuvenate yourself from the inside out.
very disappointed

Reviewer: F. Walliczek,
I expected this to be a book on healthy lifestyle, balanced diet maybe some supplements.

Instead I find that the author constantly prescribes hormones. I find this extremely dangerous, I don't think that this is healthy at all to influence your body like this - and in any case it should be done under strict medical control. I feel like this book incites reader to self-medicate with hormones.

A random passage from the book:
"I immediately placed her on a total dementia-reversing program consisting
of several natural hormones: human growth hormone (HGH),
natural estrogen, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), calcitonin, and
parathyroid."

This book might be interesting if you're 50 years or older and feel that you have a serious problem with your ageing. If you think about how to prevent ageing or want to live a healthier lifestyle I don't recommend it.
Great Insight

I first read Susan Sommer's book breakthrough. She mentioned and talks with Dr. Eric Braverman in her book, so I ordered his book. Both of these books were so helpful to me to understand what's going on in my body, what to eat and not eat, changes in my lifestyle for a healther body and mind, and so much more! I made several of the changes they suggested starting 1 year ago, I am thinking better, feeling so much better, excerising easier, happier with the total new me now. oh, I also took off 30 lbs in the process of my changes. I feel and look years younger and everyone tells me the same.

The Very Best Primer in the Biz

Review Date: March 24, 2001
Reviewer: Rick Morse, Flushing, Michigan USA
At last--a makeup book that doesn't aspire to be the encyclopedic end-all; instead, it teaches techniques that all theatre students should master for the roles they play most often. The full-color photos are second to none, and Thudium's recommendations for makeup products that are kind to young actors' faces -- such as Mehron's wonderful Celebre line -- make this an ideal text for advanced high school students as well as for those attending colleges and universities. I've always been a Corson devotee, but this excellent source has convinced me that, while Corson's book should be available for reference, Thudium's book should be number one on the high school, college, or university instructor's list.
Excellent Primer Textbook

I'm an absolute beginner in makeup, even though I'm in my 30's. My recent interest in Theatrical makeup led me to buy this book. I was EXTREMELY delighted to find clear pictures presented on a variety of faces and skin types. The book is layed out very like a college text with examples and exercises. I found it VERY useful in developing a solid foundation (hee hee!) in doing my own and others makeup.
Excellent beginning makeup text

I am so happy I stumbled upon this book. I've been teaching stage makeup at various universities for over five years and using the Corson book. This book offers clear, color, step-by-step, examples of the basic makeup techniques I cover in my course. The only other book this easy to follow is Makeup for Theatre, Film, and Television by Baygen and it's out of print. This is definately my new course book.
nothing special

The design techniques for basic contouring and period make-up are solid and the full color photos are helpful. Also, the author includes solid instructions for tranfering drawn schematics onto the face. The "fantasy" make-up section though is a joke-she showcases design projects from her jr. high/high school classes and many more closely resemble advanced face-painting instead of useful stage techniques. Unfortunately this book is still superior to many beginning stage make-up books on the market.
Great tool for all actors and crew.

Good Book for Beginning Stage Makeup Class

Review Date: December 16, 2009
Reviewer: Natalie H. Leavenworth, Portland, Oregon
I have used this as the textbook for three beginning makeup classes and really like it. It is ideal for college students who are just starting to do makeup. The pictures are large, and in color, and the instructions are clear. I like the period styles section very much. It is nice to use a textbook for a beginning course that doesn't cost too much too. Many of the students in my classes are only going to take the one class and they need to know how to put makeup on for the shows they will be acting in. Since they also have to buy a makeup kit for the class, buying an expensive, encyclopedic text would be a hardship and wouldn't be useful. This book is the best I have found for beginners.
Excellent basic guide

Review Date: October 6, 2008
Reviewer: steve, DeKalb, IL USA
I'm active in community theater and needed some guidance on makeup. I'm at a disadvantage because I never had the classroom training in makeup that theater students receive, and misinformation about makeup techniques is rampant in the community theater world. For somebody like me, Laura Thudium's Stage Makeup is a gold mine. Unlike most other books on makeup (which have lots of confusing verbiage and small black-and-white pictures), Thudium's book has many large, detailed color photographs of the most common makeup applications, accompanied by very clear, brief explanations of the underlying principles.

I am currently in a production where I play an 80-year-old man (I'm actually 51) and I used Thudium's book as my guide. I'm getting lots of compliments on how realistic my old-age makeup is.

This is a good book to introduce you in the world of Stage Makeup. The book has many photos with makeups step-by-step, and good texts. I'm brasilian and it was a suggestion of my makeup teacher, that studied stage and movie makeup in Hollywood. It's a good choice to study this tecniques.
Good, but limited in scope

Review Date: May 12, 2007
Reviewer: K. Cusson,
I am an older actor (50's) and was looking for something that would give some solid help with good make-up technique, especially with the older face (all of the models are much younger in this book). The price is a little high for a book this short and too much time is given to "fantasy" type faces. Not as useful as I had hoped it would be. If this is a "textbook" it must be for a very limited "overview" type class.

This is a wonderful book. I used it as a textbook for a theatre class. The pictures are wonderful and show you step by step what to do. The book has everything from how to do old makeup, young, fat, skinny, scars, cuts, fantasy and more. I am excited about keeping this book and using it to work on future productions!
Excellent!

As a quick and dirty primer for creating makeup effects for the theater, this book is great! Ms. Thudium is thorough without being redundant, and gives step by step instructions for outfitting a basic makeup kit, how to incorporate natural features into makeup design, examples of period makeup for period plays and best of all, how to create age and weight effects. These instructions are accompanied by color pictures that illustrate each stage of the process, and all are extremely helpful. The fantasy makeup section is very cool.
Pretty darn informative!

I had certain expectations going in when I picked up this book. I have to say, though I am thouroughly impressed on the straightforward simplicity of the instructions!

The way the author covered the basics of highlight and showdow was very informative. Also the bit about the practicing brushestokes was helpful as well.

I am glad I now own it.
Poor representation for Stage Makeup

Review Date: May 5, 2008
Reviewer: MakeupMaster, Kentucky USA
Sadly, I appear to be the only naysayer to this book. I purchased it some time ago. I have MANY books in my library about makeup, stage makeup, prosthetics and the like, including being a student of an academy award winning makeup artist's course, and this book ranks about as low as they come. I have an old, old set of books from way back (Herman Buchman or something like that) that are as bad as this one is. Sadly, we have yet again, another "costumer" who THINKS she knows how to do stage makeup because she has had a few courses in it herself and has SADLY taught others for some time. I marvel at how bad this really is. Has no-one ever heard of blending hard edges of makeup? Has no-one ever heard of not using pencils that are as thick as crayons to do lines and creases? Where is this stuff being taught? Where is quality makeup work on the college level? This isn't stylized opera makeup or avante garde makeup work yet it ALL looks like it is. I'll tell you. Good makeup work doesn't exist in this book and so many other poorly done works. EVERYONE SHOULD be made to use Corson's books - the best available still. But sadly many don't. This book while cheap - wasn't worth the $25 bucks I spent on it. Having done theater makeup for nearly 50 years, I find it amateurish at best and another poor repsentation of someone with "credentials" getting by on whatever status they've been able to achieve and banking on it to sell books, that while slick and flashy are poor in content and proper representation of an art that continues to make me laugh when I see how badly makeup work is being done by those who say they know. I wish someone would come out with a good book that doesn't distort people's understanding of how good theatrical makeup work should be done. This one falls short of helping in that regard. Back to Corson I guess. It's the only one so far EXCEPT MAKING FACES, PLAYING GOD
by Thomas Morawetz - one of the BEST, most academic treatises on makeup there is thus far of the newest presentations. GET this book - it too is inexpensive although it covers much more than theater makeup specifically, it's still an intelligent treatise on makeup, the psychology of makeup and displays some excellent examples of quality work. And again while NOT a theater makeup book, FAR better than this one by Thudium. I'd give mine away but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Even Vincent Kehoe's book on makeup is better than this by far. Sorry, just my 50 year experienced opinion.
Wish it was mine!

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my niece, and glanced through it before I wrapped it up. It looks great! Very detailed, great step-by-step photos. Appears that it would be a good training book for a theatre makeup beginner. I've put it on my own wish list and am hoping to see it under the tree. If not, I'm certainly going to buy a copy for myself!
Helpful photos~~

This book is filled with very helpful photos. Unfortunately... I was hoping to see more variety. Example, more drastic changes on the people before and after makeup. Example, children having an "old age" makeup on, making them look like aged folks. More animal face painting maybe?
Perhaps a little more special effects in it?
Nevertheless... I enjoyed this book.

Product Description

Rona Berg knows that sometimes women have dry skin. Or tired eyes. Or limp hair. Or a pimple. And as a beauty expert, she knows exactly what to do about it. Drawing on years of covering the beauty industry, working behind the scenes at fashion shows, fixing actresses’ and models’ beauty meltdowns, and learning insider information from hundreds of consultants and make-up artists, Ms. Berg—author of Beauty: The New Basics, with 122,000 copies in print—offers up the best 1,000 tried-and-true tips.

Indexed by problem and solution, Fast Beauty is indispensable, filled with the kinds of advice, ideas, and help that sell millions of women’s magazines a month. Spa tips. Anti-stress tips. The “20-second face,” “the two-minute face,” the “five-minute face.” Innovative remedies: Rub olive oil into dry cuticles to soften them; use honey to get rid of a pimple overnight; to tighten the face temporarily, apply tomato juice (preferably fresh-squeezed) for ten minutes, and for the reverse—if your face is tight from too much sun—apply plain yogurt to the skin and leave on for ten minutes. A full chapter shows how to solve beauty pitfalls caused by hormones at all stages of life; another deals with various problems caused by working out. And for every busy businesswoman, it tells what quick fix to use when heading into an important meeting straight off the red-eye—or heading straight from the office out on a blind date.

Great book with unusual NEW tips!

Review Date: July 1, 2007
Reviewer: Jenni Kmiotek, Long Island
I bought that "Confessions of a Beauty Editor" book by the editor of Allure magazine, expecting it to be full of beauty secrets and tips. After a glimpse through the pages, I sent it right the hell back to Amazon. What a WASTE of money. Apparently the author feels "putting on moisturizer before your foundation to help it slide on more evenly" is a great tip. Yeah. Maybe if you're 15 and have never worn makeup before in your life... ? No, even then it's still common sense. Ahem. THIS book contains the beauty tips and secrets I was looking for! Thank you, Rona Berg. I've subscribed to beauty magazines for years and I own nearly every Makeup Tips book ever published, so I know the basics. While there are a few "duh" moments in this one, the good advice far outweighs the re-runs, and I came across page after page of tips that I'd never heard before. Well worth the money, unlike SOME other books...

This book is a find. There are so many useful tips on each page that it is worthy of a spot on your bookshelf. Have you ever read a beauty tip in a magazine and it made a significant difference for you? This book is 1000 of those tips in between a front and back cover. You will learn little things that make a difference like what the word "natural" means in the cosmetic world, and what to do if the tip of your wax pencils keep breaking off when you sharpen them. There is an idea on how to apply perfume and even recipes to mix up some of your own beauty products in your own kitchen. It is also an excellent gift for your gal pals, if you ever need to come up with a useful gift for someone special. This book is outstanding and worth the price in what you will gain in beauty tips.

Need some help looking better? You've found it!

Reviewer: Judy K. Polhemus, LA
Do you need a little help looking better? Do you have bags under your eyes? Is your back stressed? Do you fall asleep at your desk at work? Do your lips chap when you are outside? Go no further. "Fast Beauty: 1,000 Quick Fixes" will answer those questions as well as hundreds more to help you look your best quickly.

The book is arranged logically: Beauty RX, Hormonal Hangups, the Outside World, On the go, and Smart Products. If you are like me, you flip through a book like this, picking out the areas that most apply to you. Allow me to share information to reveal this book's big appeal.

On page 170 is a Japanese term that applies to a huge number of Americans: "Karoshi"--"death from overwork," aha! To alleviate, take a quick walk, do ten minutes of jumping jacks, anything quickly active to get the blood flowing.
On page 53 is a hint to ward off dry, flaky skin before a big date or just for yourself: use a body scrub to exfoliate. If none is available, use corn meal, oatmeal, or baking soda on a washcloth and scrub as usual. Apply moisturizer.

On page 27 are seven steps to revitalizing your makeup in two minutes if you go from work to a date.
On page 268 you will learn the beauty secret for skin that Italian women have used for centuries. Mix olive oil with blood orange or lemon juice to use as a one-step cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing agent.

I alway look for lavender in these books. On page 264 it is used in making bath salts, a product invented by the Romans for their spas and the means to soothe tired muscles.

I cannot end this review without looking at the cover. The kiwi is for decreasing eye puffiness, the spiral mascara brush is to remove mascara clumps, the opalescent lipstick is to make the bottom lip look larger.

To make the most of this book, read it in segments or find a problem of the moment, use the index to find a "fast beauty" fix and do it. After all, it is your beauty.

Addendum: This book is about beauty. That means men can use it, too, except maybe the pregnancy segment. Men, aren't you interested in your beauty?

I first saw this book and immediately thought it was just another beauty book that tells me information I already know. However, upon second glance I picked up the book and started to skim the pages. I was surprised to see that it actually has useful info inside.

The makeup section is a bit basic, don't expect to be wowed by how instantly beautiful you look by changing the way you apply mascara. It does, however, have extremely helpful tips if you are in a beauty disaster or just have something nagging you. Overall, It was worth the money and definitely opened my eyes to some new techniques!

Reviewer: Dove,
Sorry, but this book is not worth having. I couldn't believe some of the worthless tips, some very questionable -- both the value and safety of them. I got the feeling that nothing but supposed beauty mattered, health being secondary. The harsh items she says, in "emergency" situations, to use on your skin, around eyes... I'm more health-oriented, prefer natural or home-made products, yet still want to use the best, and ideally safest, cosmetics available. Health being top priority. I think the kiwi on the cover made me think this was aligned with my thinking. Not so much. Lots of mainstream products are listed under her tips. Much better to just google "natural...homemade...alternative...beauty..." Safe and much more effective (you'd be amazed what some inexpensive and very safe, find in kitchen, items can do for your skin/hair). Btw, wearing mainstream lipstick is so not wise -- putting LEAD on your lips throughout the day...and stop using so much glop on your hair, THAT is what's frying it out...we were never meant to use all that crap. It strips the natural, healthy oils, screws up the pH balance...after using soap, use witch hazel to help restore it... We are born beautiful, nature holds everything we need to stay that way, but we start screwing with it, with the BALANCE, same with our world... Save your money, this book is a dinosaur, not for wiser, modern, more confident, beauty AND health-oriented women.

Product Description

Body care and eco-consciousness need not be mutually exclusive, according to Deborah Burnes. In Part I of this timely book, she explains the historical roots of the search for beauty, and how it has led to a $60 billion cosmetics industry that misleads and confuses consumers on everything from product effectiveness to toxicity. In Part II, Burnes details options for buying natural and organic products in a range of budgets, with each graded on a “good,” “better,” or “best” scale in terms of chemical content and overall health impact. Part III discusses the positive effects chemical-free products have on overall health, and how those effects are expressed in the appearance of our skin. Part IV contains a wealth of facts, tips, and shortcuts to help consumers experience living green and enhancing personal beauty. Written in an engaging style but based in science, Look Great, Live Green offers a fresh perspective on living an eco-friendly, body-friendly, beauty-friendly lifestyle.

Excellent guide to buying healthier products

Review Date: February 4, 2010
Reviewer: Krista Bolan, Az
I received a copy of this a few months ago and am finding myself referring to it regularly when considering which brands to select in my ongoing effort to rid my household of as many toxic products as possible. It has become one of the more useful guides I own because it actually gives lists of real brands to consider as well as providing all the information a consumer needs to make a better choice if those particular brands are hard to come by.

The book begins with a quick look at trends in makeup throughout history. It then moves into a discussion about how the ingredients in the products we use can affect our health. From the outset, the author reassures the reader that this book is for everyone, no matter how strongly you feel about limiting your exposure to toxins. Burnes accomplishes this by encouraging you to find your "comfort zone" and providing lists of products rated as "good," "better," and "best." I personally find this approach refreshing. It is too easy, with the onslaught of books coming out on this subject, to get obsessed with how toxic the world is. Most of us want to make some changes without dedicating our entire lives to avoiding everything that might harm us.

Deborah Burnes has really done her homework. I appreciate her emphasis on being an informed consumer and the importance of recognizing how companies often limit access to ingredient information, overstate the green-ness of their products, and fool consumers into thinking that because one product is really free of the scary stuff, that their entire product line is just as safe. She urges consumers to do their homework and contact companies for further information when it is either missing or vague. Her opinion on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database echoes my own - while it's a great tool, it has a long way to go to give us an accurate comprehensive sense about what's safe and what's not. Not that that's their fault - in many cases, product information is very hard to get, and dissecting all the research done on just one chemical is monumental by itself, let alone for everything that shows up in the things we use every day. The fact that Burnes took the time to try and verify information by tracking down primary sources referred to by the industry about the ingredients tells me she's serious about obtaining and analyzing the facts. Her tips on how to get the best use of the Skin Deep database are valuable to me, as I am someone who has been a bit frustrated by how much it still lacks but haven't yet discovered a better source for researching the safety of a product.

Her top ten lists are full of good tips in small bites. I plan to put them in my pda so they are always with me when I'm shopping.

A solid foundation in media literacy is something I think is a must for everyone, and I consider myself pretty well informed. But Burnes reveals things about personal care products that even I didn't know about - how a manufacturer can leave out ingredients it lists on the product's labels, tricks used in advertising to make a company seem "greener," and how words like "natural" and "organic" lack concrete definitions or FDA laws about how they can be used. I love the real life examples she gives in this book, such as when she takes a bottle of Suave shampoo and summarizes the scientific research on health effects for each ingredient. But health is not her only focus in this book - she is also concerned about sustainability and environmental impacts. The book raises consciousness about the use of resources in packaging, ingredients, and what it takes to actually get it to a store's shelves.

The largest portion of the book is devoted to comparison shopping. It covers brands I see regularly in the places I shop - and sometimes reveals tidbits about those stores themselves. The author isn't shy about difficulties she's had while researching a brand, a product, a store, or an organization, but her concerns are never petty or trivial. Although it could be argued that she does have some self-interest in how this information is presented because she is also has her own line of beauty products, nevertheless, her thorough investigative work makes her a credible source of information. I feel that the author has done a lot of the legwork for me, as a consumer, in writing this book.

One thing I find a little odd is that her section on chemical-free makeovers provides analysis of products from her own company, Sumbody. It reads a bit like advertising camouflaged as strictly-informative text. But in some ways it adds to her credibility as a manufacturer because she writes about how her process of developing a product unfolds, which could be very useful to anyone wanting to start their own product line.

The book concludes with some recipes for natural products, ideas for the engaged activist, a list of resources for doing further research, appendices for both natural and toxic ingredients, a bibliography, and index.

I would have left out the excerpts from the rich and famous - this book doesn't need them. It's as if someone thought adding famous people to the book would make it more appealing, more "sparkly." But the text is solid and valuable on its own; no window dressing is needed.

In sum, this is a treasure of information on a topic the author clearly feels passionate about. I highly recommend it for anyone who wishes to make healthier, better-informed decisions about the products they use every day.
Handy, if Overwhelming

Look Great, Live Green is chock-full of the kind of information about exactly what we're putting on on skin (and our hair and our teeth) that it would take you years to pull together on your own.

Author Deborah Burnes owns her own all-natural (really!) skin care line and she has really gone the extra mile to find out what's in the drugstore and luxury products and how all of those synthetic products add up to a chemical soup on our largest organ - our skin.

The book includes an overview of the current manufactured cosmetic industry and the sorry state of federal regulation of topical products and toxic ingredients. Burnes offers helpful "Good-Better-Best" lists of alternative products, and while most of us may not be ready to make our own deodorant, thinking through the cumulative effects on ourselves and the planet is a good thing.

If you ARE interested in making homemade care products, Burnes includes easy-to-use recipes and handy "What To Avoid When You're Shopping" lists. The wealth of information is sometimes overwhelming, and the book would have benefited from more bulleted lists and a judicious pruning of Burnes' anecdotes. Her publisher also did her no favors in the production department. The paragraphs are way too long for this kind of book and the type is squeezed too close together, giving many pages a "gray" effect that makes them difficult to read.

But Burnes has written a good guide to those looking to make some changes, large or small.

This book will change how you look at beauty products!

Reviewer: A. Kim,
I had a love/hate relationship with the book the moment I picked it up. Although I try to live a healthy life, I was blissfully ignorant about the chemicals in my beauty products. And while I do continually want to make changes for the better, I wasn't necessarily ready to throw out all the products I currently use.

That being said, I found this book very eye-opening and I would recommend it to everyone. Reading it made me want to throw all my current products in the hazardous waste and start new. She urges you to find your comfort zone with the products you use and provides a list of good, better, best products. I really appreciated the suggestions for safe products to use and especially the chapter with recipes to make your own. I found the author very knowledgeable and down to earth. While she makes a good case for using more natural products, she also lists quite a few resources in the back of the book and always urges you to do your own research.

If you have any interest in living a cleaner, greener life, I would highly recommend this book!

When I first started this book I thought it was just going to be someone trying to tell me how I should be using certain types of personal care products and pushing their own products on me. I was truly mistaken. Look Great, Live Green is a book that teaches and informs you of the misconceptions we have been raised to believe. I found the book well written and easy to follow while reading.

If you are trying to figure out why your skin keeps looking older, dryer or just not what you are use it is most likely due to the so called 'natural' products you are currently using. Most of the cosmetics out there are not as natural as you may think. I learned that some of the products that I have now are not as natural as I thought. Anyone that is interested in saving money, time, their skin, and the environment should take a look at this book.

Deborah Burnes has her own line of personal care products that are natural. She did not force her products on you as you read the book. Deborah rates products from, Good, Better and Best. Some categories do just have Better or Best because she felt that was adequate. She also tells you not to try and change everything at once, you need to find your comfort zone and the products that are right for you.

There is a chapter on recipes to create your own natural products which I hope to try sometime. The end of the book lists resources to do research on your own. There is also a section that lists the natural products and there benefits plus a list of toxic ingredients and the cautions on how to handle them, if they are accidentally ingested or make contact with certain parts of the body and some diseases they are linked to. Now just reading those sections makes me not want to use the non natural products just out of fear of really causing severe injuries.

5 stars
Finally, a green lifestyle book that's realistic!

I was most intrigued by the sub-title of this volume, "Choosing Beauty Solutions That Are Planet-Safe and Budget-Smart." All too often, it seems, choosing to live in a manner that is more eco-friendly means choosing to live without something altogether, rather than just choosing a greener alternative (i.e., hybrid cars and solar heating, both of which require a substantial amount of money up front, thus being out of the range of most consumers).

Having worked in the beauty industry as a young woman, I am well aware of both the lure of cosmetics and their often unpleasant ingredients. I read Ruth Winter's book, "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients," in its first edition, and found it to be quite eye-opening. Then I happened upon Debra Lynn Dadd's "Nontoxic & Natural," another gem.

But what I like most about this recent foray into the world of green beauty is that the author readily admits that she isn't "completely" green herself. She says, "I am not an extremist who things we should all sew all our own clothes and eat only what we grow ourselves. I believe in affecting change through moderation, and I want consumers to have accessible, healthy choices .... I try to be 85 percent healthy and reserve 15 percent for some vitamin J--junk." I like this, because it reflects a healthy attitude, and that allows for a guilt-free, easy-to-swallow approach that prompts readers to make real, and lasting, changes in their lives.

The book is organized into sections beginning with "Beauty Product ABCs," and then venturing into "Let's Go Comparison Shopping," followed by "What's a Busy Woman To Do?" and then "Recipes--and a Dash of Activism." There are comprehensive appendices for resources, ingredients and bibliographical information, as well as an index.

This is a great book. Not too technical, but not too light-weight. I heartily recommend it.

Everyday we are confronted with a host of choices of what to use on our bodies from the start of the day (toothpaste) to the end (facial moisturizer). All of these choices are important and are opportunities to use products that limit our exposure to harmful (wow...are some harmful!!!!) chemicals.
The first part of the book gives readable, useful information about the various chemicals in products that most people are familiar with. The author takes the reader through chemical make-overs -- where she guides people through a process of paring down the number of products they use, choosing less toxic products and making their own products when possible.
There are recipes for making your own bath and beauty products as well and information about what types of ingredients (and the variety of names they have) to look for and to avoid.
Overall, this is a helpful book that isn't too frightening and overbearing. The author is familiar with the issues that face consumers everyday and the variety of ways that companies can make their products look "all natural" when they are far from it.

Reviewer: J. Stout,
This was the most eye-opening and informative book I have ever read on the beauty/cosmetic industry.
I learned so much about the products most of use/buy from our local drug, department stores, etc.. (and what I learned about them was not so good, to say the least!).... But, the author of this book has a way of teaching/explaining everything so well and gives a wealth of information on the many economical, eco-conscious/organic alternative body & skin care products that are readily available.
This book is a Must Read for anyone who has any interested in the beauty/cosmetic industry & the products that many of us buy and put in/ on our bodies Everyday. Being aware & informed, as well as eco-conscious in our choices is a Good thing (for ourselves and our planet)... Thankfully, the information & guidance in this book (especially all the "good", "better" & "best" recommendations in it) made me realize it is something I can easily do, while Truly looking & feeling Great about it!

Even though the author has a product line of her own she also includes lists of comparable brands.

YIKES! This book really opened my eyes about all the junk I have been putting ON my body -- just when I thought I was safe if I only worried about the stuff I put IN my body. However, I have a child who is very allergic to artificial colors and some artificial flavors, and one day it occurred to me as I was putting on lip stick that she would never be able to wear an artificially colored lipstick just as she can't eat artificially colored foods. When I started cooking all natural for her, and eating along with her, I realized quickly how much better I felt. Now, after reading this book, I can't wait to switch to all natural for all my skin and body care products to see what kind of impact that makes on my skin health and overall health. What is the point of avoiding artificial red dyes (made from coal tar derivatives) to make me feel better if I then smear them all over my lips and "eat" a little red dye every time I eat or drink? I noticed an immediate difference when I stopped eating food with red dye, so why it didn't occur to me to change my lip stick is beyond me!
I appreciated how informative this book was, as well as the science in it, Look Great, Live Green: Choosing Bodycare Products that Are Safe for You, Safe for the Planet especially about the toxic ingredients in my skin/body care products, as well as safer and natural alternatives. At first read I found it a little scary and depressing, but then inspiring as I read on and realized that making this change in my life didn't actually have to be all that hard. I have already learned to read labels for my daughter, and it really won't be that big of a deal, or skip the label reading and just change to the products she recommends. I really loved the recipe section! I can't wait to get started trying to make my own natural body care products!

Have you ever thought about what ingredients are used in the make-up we use everyday? Or have you read the ingredient list and realized you don't know what most the ingredients are? These questions and many more don't get easily answered by the cosmetic products companies, still Deborah Burnes sets out to not only answer them in this informative book but also teach us that beauty does not mean sacrifice. At times it borders on preachy and it goes on and on about the harm big companies do, so be prepared to read a lot; this is not a book for light readers. Yet it never stops enlightening the reader about what is good and bad for your skin. What makes this book really great is the make-up recipes that anyone can make at home for a fraction of what we are usually are charged at stores. Overall, I hope that in the near future Burnes will enlighten us (and save us some money) with more recipes to try at hom

" Don't envy those who Become Younger , do it yourself."

Review Date: August 8, 2009
Reviewer: Anil Kapur,
To quote Dr. N.W. Walker, "Don't envy those who Become Younger, do it yourself".

I read this book 12 years ago and it changed my life. No other book has had such a profound effect on me.

Frankly I thought that I was the fittest person, eating well and exercising regularly until I started feeling unwell. I went to a well known cardiologist who told me that he hadn't come across anybody as fit as me. When I read `Become Younger', and other books of Dr. Walker, I realised that I had early symptoms of heart trouble and was heading for a big ailment in the coming years.

Dr. Walker has given me the confidence of living without the fear of falling sick. I truly have Become Younger. Now at the age of 43 I am a free man, and I have been free for the last 12 years, No Doctors, No Medicines, No Ailments and much more fit than I was 12 years ago. I am living a Vibrant Life!

Besides being a businessman, in my passion to help others, I have become a Certified Colon Therapist, Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Chef & a Rawfoodist. I have read many related books on health, but have yet to come across anybody who had such comprehensive knowledge like Dr. Walker. After reading Dr. Walker's books, you will soon realise that his 70 years of research was completely based on science, logic and truth.

Dr. Walker above everything else was a human being par excellence. He never profited out of peoples health by selling them products. He wrote his books at the request of his patients and followers so that they could to benefit from his wisdom.

I am quoting Dr. Walker again,

"My advice to every man, woman and child would simply be:

Read this book today, and LIVE. Tomorrow may be too late.
Study these lessons today. Tomorrow may be too late.
Figure out today just what is the matter with you. Tomorrow may be too late.
Change your wrong eating and other habits today. Tomorrow may be too late.
Begin practicing how to Become Younger, today. Tomorrow may be too late.
Base your knowledge on study, experience and considered judgment, not on habit or hear-say. Begin TODAY. Tomorrow may be too late.
Learn to know the TRUTH before you ever jump at conclusions. No human soul is ever in exactly in the same state or on the same plane after the truth is learned. He is either better or worse, higher or lower, softer or harder".
Very informative

Reviewer: J. Smith,
I found the book to very informative. It was easy to read and comprehend. The explaination for why some of the foods Americans eat to day, cause us so many problems seems rational. Walker gives reasons to change your eating habits. However, I find it difficult for someone to just drink/eat vegetable and fruit juices and salads. I began juicing 2 months ago due to an ailment. I have been taking the suggested cocktail/vegetable juice mentioned by Walker for this ailment. It has noticable worked. I am a generally healthy person, but I have been taking in 1-2 servings of juice cocktails and feel better overall. The book is a little archaic but it details helpful health information everyone could learn from.

I don't know a single person who could EVER follow this book to the T, but with that being said, it all makes sense! The truth of the matter is, if you could use and implement just ONE thing from this book into your life you will be better off. If this one change is actually a lifestyle change and not just a diet, then you will be tempted to try another and this is how most people should follow this book. I have no doubt in my mind that if I followed this book exactly I would feel ten times better and be less prone to future diseases and degrading health but, it will be an uphill battle for sure. I've been eating very "healthy" foods in regards to my friends and family for the past three years, lentils, quinoa, raw almonds, salads with spinach leaves, lots of vegetables, brown rice, steel cut oats in the morning and fish at night. But, most of these aren't considered healthy to Mr. Walker. I'm then given two options, try harder or stay the same and not fall back into my old patterns (fast food, crap, crap and more crap). Like I said earlier, an uphill battle for me but everyone has different self discipline levels. When I think about it though, I would choose the living foods diet over dieing before my time every day of the year.

We all know we're going to leave this earth one day,why not while we're here try and live healthy and be the best we can to have a better quality of life for ourselves and our families!

A hundred years or so is not the limit, we can live for hundreds or even thousands of years when the environment and the living style of society as a whole is the right one.

Instead of wasting it gradually, which depletes the system depriving you of your life, sexual energy can be transmuted transforming that essential power into spiritual-physical life force.

The thing about preserving your youth, energy and health goes beyond a daily fruit and/or raw vegetables diet, it also must include:

1. Sexual transmutation (essential)
2. Daily contact with sun light (if possible)
3. Drinking only alive, chemicals free water
4. Fresh air breathing exercises (very important)
5. Moderate physical exercise
6. Positive thinking and meditation
7. Sensible fasting
8. An understanding that death is not a solution
9. To live for physical immortality

I read this book back in 1980 and it has catipulted me into a nice vegetarian diet. Written by a Pathologist who actualy at one point in the book opens up one of his friends, who was a Doctor. The Dr. died of unhealthy eating practices. Oh the western doctors what do they know about health? Its so simple you really are what you eat. This is the most simplist book to read and understand about our human colons and how we eat to either live good or die a slow death by eating wrong. It just common sense. You don't need a degree to figure it out. Many illustrations and written very simply in laymans terms. A must have! I highly recommend it. I am now 48 and many think I am in my 30's. Not only do I look younger but my energy level is much higher than many my age. I also recommend: 'Coming Back' (from ISCON) and 'Diet for a New America'.

Review Date: July 24, 2006
Reviewer: Kelly Pierce, Chicago, IL
Every topic this author touches in this book receives the same advice: consume raw fruit and vegetable juices and have a few colonics. The author ignores totally standard approaches that help digestion such as drinking plenty of water and taking in fiber. The reader looses out on a thorough and comprehensive approach to health as the author is so taken by the raw food religion. Additionally, living on juiced raw food may not be the best long-term approach, although the book seems somewhat of a retort of the processed food diet that was gaining popularity in the late 1940s when this book was originally written.

A comprehensive, user-friendly guide to the skills and techniques for measuring garments and creating spec sheets. It's an excellent resource book which provides the fundamentals for building, developing, streamlining your flats and specs library. It's a neat and concise reference book you would find so useful that would like to own and keep at hand at all times. Furthermore, the enclosed CD-ROM makes it even more versatile for it offers you the possibility to save, send, print, alter (and carry!) all the information. I find it extremely helpful.

This book is great for anyone new at drawing flats and specs, or if you have been in the industry for years, it is a great brush up. I have also taken a class by one of the authors and she made flats easy...just the way the book does it!
Quick and Easy Reference Book

I have been looking for a book like this for a while. I find most books with information on spec sheet writing complicated and unorganized; not this one, this book separates garments into different chapters such as how to spec a blazer, pant and shorts, a vest, a turtleneck, etc. A simple glance at the glossary and I am able to quickly find the category of clothing I need to build a spec sheet for and have all the information neatly presented in bulletin style with clearly drawn samples of flats indicating how to correctly measure the garment, which is invaluable since so many books tend to assume the reader already knows how to establish measuring points. There is also a handy basic spec sheet template included for every category.

Easy to read and easy to learn --this is one book I am keeping around for a long time.
Fantastic

This book is comprehensive and exactly what I was looking for when I landed a job as an assistant spec writer at a major design company. I had done a spec sheet - once - at school. After reading this manual, I felt comfortable measuring things and using all the correct abbreviations. Having the excel sheets is awesome, and the clip art included can create a lovely symbols library for easy designing. I also like having an entire set of body templates for flat sketching handy. This is much more than a spec manual - it's like several reference books and worksheet books in one - and it never runs out b/c it's all printable from the included CD!

Great, great, great! I have not found many references on specs, which are very difficult to do in an amazing way. Before purchasing this book, my specs were mediocre/ average first year fashion student. After thoroughly working with this book, however, my specs were fantastic! I highly recommend this book.
Comprehensive
