Best Illustrated Historical Fashion Volumes Available!

This is the most beautifully illustrated book available on the history of fashion. I have looked at many, but none are so thorough and definitive for the 18th to the 20th centuries. The publisher lists the book at $49.99 (unbelievable for what you get!). It has been reprinted several times since I first became aware of it. Each time I have missed my chance to get a copy -- It seems to sell out quite regularly. After almost losing hope, I was finally able to get a copy of this latest edition!
The current edition is a set which consists of two large volumes. The first covers the 18th and 19th centuries, and the second is devoted to the 20th century. These two tomes are in a sturdy outer case. The illustrations are clear and detailed, making it easy to examine the construction used for the garments, and also are displayed so that one can see the overall beauty of the craftsmanship. They are truly works of art! Text is at a minimum; the books consist first and foremost of these beautiful illustrations. |
Beautiful Books, Wonderful Pictures, Great Information

I work in a library where volume 1 of this book had been requested numerous times, so I got to see it close-up several times before eventually deciding that I needed to own it. When I ordered it, it wasn't yet clear in the listing that it was 2 volumes, and I thought that I was getting volume 1 only--in paperback--and I still thought the price was great considering how many wonderful photographs the book contains. Imagine my surprise when I got two hefty hardback tomes!
I ordered these books to assist in writing historical novels, wanting to inject a bit of verisimilitude in regards to the clothing involved, and it's been a great resource. The brief essays at the beginning of each book are rich with detail about things like what corsets and dresses were called, how the clothes were worn, changing fashion trends, etc.
I liked this so well that I've given copies to several friends. |
Get yours now-yum yum yum.

| These two hc volumes are a dream!!! I found my set in Paris and dragged them around all day because I have never seen so many pounds of color photos of real archival costumes- I paid 39.00 euros- about 50 bucks- and even then it was a steal! You will love these books. |

| I bought what I think is a compiled version of these two books from a local bookstore. It is similar length and has the same title. I have long been searching for a good fashion history book and this one is fabulous. Nearly every page is a large photo of a real antique costume. There is a nice balance of close-up detail photos and full photos, as well as undergarments and accessories. You can really watch the progression of fashion through nearly 300 years. I also like the amount of text that is written; just enough to explain the style progression and the political environment of the time. A picture is worth a thousand words and trying to explain a garment in text is pointless when you can just look at the picture. The only thing I wish was different is that the modern section (from about the 70's on)features primarily avant garde experimental clothing, not the stuff we actually see on red carpets and runways. |
A pleasant journey through Fashion History for a great price!!!!,

I am in the process of building my own Fashion Design Library with books that covers differents aspects of this fascinating world (drawing, patternmaking, draping, sociological, business and so forth) including Fashion History. I knew about fashion books published by Taschen during a Fashion Design Course I took last Summer in Italy. Previously I got Fashion Now (Icons) from Taschen and this one has an even better price-quality relationship: fancy presentation, high quality of the pictures and brief explanations about each century covered by the 2 volumes and most of the pieces presented. You can really spend hours!!! enjoying all the finishing details of the clothes.

| When visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art I found this book, and let me tell you, what a find! It is quite impressive in size, detail, length, and quality of pictures. The books range from the 18th century to present. The set consists of two magnificent volumes. Whether you love fashion or are simply interested in how people in centuries before us lived and dressed, get this book! By the way- this makes an amazing coffee table book. Not many (female!) friends and relatives can leave my house without taking a look at the set. Would make a great gift as well. Well worth the price. |

Everything is perfect in these two volumes. Was terribly upest when the first issue (single volume) was discontinued, but this one tops it. Clear photos, specific research and exceptionally well laid out. My students beg to look at it, and THE PRICE! Incredibly inexpensive for a book of this sort.
Makes a great gift- and can substitute for barbells when needed.

This set of books is absolutely stunning. I paid NZ$150 (around US$90)at a bookstore here in New Zealand and volume 1 alone is worth every penny of the sale price.
If you're interested in historical costume, you won't regret this purchase. |

When I finally found this book (after months of anxious waiting!) at Amazon I couldn't believe it could cost that price. It's a marvelous book, hard-covered and with a case box, with uncountable luxurious photos and lots of information on the fashion of the last three hundred years.
A book no one interested in the costumes of past times can miss. |

| This purchase was a gift for my future daughter-in-law who is completing her Master's degree in costume design. The book was on a list of volumes she wished to have for her personal library and to use for research. She was very excited to recieve this book. |

I own the one volume book in paperback.
In comparing the two books side by side they are nearly identical!
But the two volume set is missing 14 pages that appear in the copy that I own! Most of the images are just close-ups of the garments, one set is a period illustration from Diderot, but some are garments completely omitted. The 20th century fashion is all complete though.
So you have a toss up choice, larger photos or more photos. otherwise they are identical!
4 out of 5 stars because of those missing pictures. |

| Got this books last christmas, and I was blown away. Have always been interesting in design, fashion and history. This book has it all. Great design on the book (maybe a little hard to handle since it quite big in size), great photos, lots and lots with detail from the garments, and the best, it give you a look in to the past. |

| I bought this book on my sewing teacher's recommendation. The pictures are beautiful and designed to show off the best of style and design for the period covered. The paper is high quality and the book is well bound - important for something I will be looking at over and over. |

there isn't much to say that others haven't said already about this great and gorgeous volume of fashions from the 18th to 20th centuries.
i picked up a copy at barnes and noble(shh) for less than twenty dollars. and once i began to turn the pages i could not stop. the photography is crystal clear and the prints are rendered in breathtaking color.
the clothing in the kyoto institute's collection is magnificently maintained and displayed. i found myself poring over the illustrations, face smashed to the page, looking for a minor flaw. there are none to be found.
this book is a reference source for anyone with the least bit of interest in clothing or costume design.
someone called this book yummy--they weren't lying. it is! |

| I can't believe I've bought those wonderful books for such a low price. The pictures are amazing! I strongly recommend the product. At first I intended to give the books to my daughter, who is Fashion Designer student, as Christmas present, but thanks to amazon.com it arrived much earlier than promised. But, when I saw the treasure I've got, I would not wait to see her happy face. We were both fascinated. What are you waiting for to purchase yours? And, once again, thank you amazon.com for the fast delivery. |

The two volume book is jam packed with amazing designs. Every page in both books has a photograph of either a sketch, piece of fabric, or entire garment.
If you are looking of a great coffee table book or some references to design your own work this is a great buy.
My only negative comment would be the fact that there is no male fashion in the book except 2 or 3 pages in total and that there are only a few examples of each era, would have liked to see more variety. Nevertheless, an amazing book. |

A "must-buy" for lovers of fashion. The photos are fantastic and I love the little blurbs about the history behind them. Definitely not a detailed history on the designers (who, what, when, where, why, how), but a great photographic history that is well-put together and a great coffee table book that EVERYONE will love.
Great for ALL ages! |

| The two set series is absolutely awesome! They provide detail pics and pics of actual existing garments. I purchased these two books based on other's reviews and was very pleased when I found out what was inside the pages. I return to these again and again for historical reference, inspiration and pleasure. |

| Purusing these two books is a delightful experience. Anyone with an appreciation for fashion and clothing created in the 17th - 20th centuries will be amazed at the care and keeping the pieces in the Kyoto Museum's collection have received. The close-up photography reveals the marvel of the handwork and creation of each design, and each piece is a wonderful representation of its era. And the price of the set was unbelievable!! All around, a wonderful find and a keeper. |

Due to the publisher not anticipating the demand for this set of books it took me just over a year to acquire my copy. It was more than worth the wait. The photography is stunning. If you have an interest in costuming
add this book to your collection without delay. |
